Alfredrick Hughes
Alfredrick Hughes (born July 19, 1962) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round (14th pick overall) in the 1985 NBA draft. Loyola career After graduating from Chicago's Robeson High School, Hughes played college basketball at Loyola Chicago, where the 6'5" (1.96 m) shooting guard averaged 17.0 points per game as a freshman, 25.7 as a sophomore, 27.6 as a junior, and 26.3 as a senior. Hughes is Loyola's all-time leading scorer with 2,914 points, ranking ninth on the NCAA career scoring list. Hughes also ended his college career as the all-time scoring leader in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, now known as the Horizon League, holding this record until Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis—who had the benefit of a fifth year of athletic eligibility due to COVID-19 disruptions—broke it in December 2022. Antoine Davis
Antoine Davis (born October 3, 1998) is an American college basketball player for the Detroit Mercy Titans of the Horizon League. Early life and high school career Davis was born in Bloomington, Indiana, where his father, Mike Davis, was a member of the Indiana Hoosiers basketball coaching staff under Bob Knight. He started training for basketball at age 12 and worked with well-known coach John Lucas II in Houston, Texas. The Detroit Mercy Titans men's basketball team is the college basketball team that represents University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan, and competes in NCAA Division I men's basketball as a member of the Horizon League. Horizon League
The Horizon League is an 11-school collegiate athletic conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, whose members are located in and near the Great Lakes region. The Horizon League founded in 1979 as the Midwestern City Conference. The conference changed its name to Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and then the Horizon League in 2001. Paul Robeson High School was a public four–year high school located in the Englewood neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in September 1977, Robeson was a part of the Chicago Public Schools district. The school was named in honor of African-American entertainer and athlete Paul Robeson. After years of declining enrollment and low academic performance, the school closed after the 2017–2018 school year and was later demolished in September 2018. The 1985 NBA Draft took place on June 18, 1985. It was also the first NBA draft of the "lottery" era. Horizon League Men's Basketball Player Of The Year
The Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Year is a basketball award given to the Horizon League's most outstanding player. The award was first given following the 1979–80 season, the first year of the conference's existence. Six players have won the award multiple times: Byron Larkin, Brian Grant, Rashad Phillips, Alfredrick Hughes, Keifer Sykes, and Loudon Love. Hughes, unlike the other four who each won twice, was awarded the player of the year on three occasions. There have only been three ties in the award's history (1981, 1983, 2022).
