Alfred Walter Adams
Alfred Walter Adams, QC was a Manx lawyer who became the Clerk of the Rolls on the Isle of Man.Mona's Herald, Wednesday, November 22, 1882; Page: 4 Biography Adams was involved in the public life of the Isle of Man for over 25 years. He was articled to John Bluett, who was a leading advocate then practising on the Isle of Man. A member of a Debating Society which held its meeting in a room in Fort Street, Douglas, Adams won respect for his skills in debate spending considerable time working on his case. Adams at once made his mark in his profession his progress said to of been steady and speedy, with Adams subsequently defending George Dumbell in the Chancery Court. He was appointed as Deputy Attorney General by Charles Ogden, however on Ogden's death in 1866 the vacant post of Attorney General was filled by Sir James Gell. Clerk Of The Rolls
The Clerk of the Rolls ( gv, Cleragh ny Lioaryn) is a judge and Head of the Judiciary in the Isle of Man. This position was formerly distinct from that of the Deemsters but now the Clerk of the Rolls is held jointly with the office of First Deemster. Queen's Counsel
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. He was also the first Manxman to become Attorney General of the Isle of Man. Biography Early life James Gell was born on 13 January 1823, the son of John Gell, of Kenna, in the parish of German, Isle of Man and Margaret (née McHutchin) of Peel, Isle of Man. Charles Richard Ogden
Charles Richard Ogden (February 6, 1791 – February 19, 1866) was a Joint Premier of the Province of Canada for Canada East from 1842 with William Henry Draper PM for Canada West. Odgen was a member of the Château Clique. Ogden was a lawyer, politician, and public servant from Canada East. Born in Quebec City, he was one of eleven sons of Isaac Ogden, a loyalist and puisne judge of the Court of King's Bench at Montreal, and Sarah Hanson. He was called to the Bar of Lower Canada in 1812 and set up practice at Trois-Rivières. One of Ogden's brothers, Peter Skene Ogden, was a noted explorer and fur trader who worked for the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company. Attorney General (Isle Of Man)
The Attorney General ( gv, Yn Turneyr Theayagh or Yn Ard-Turneyr) of the Isle of Man is the government's top legal adviser and has an ''ex officio'' (non-voting) seat in the Legislative Council and in Tynwald Court. The Attorney General is a Crown officer, rather than a member of the Isle of Man Government. He is appointed by the monarch on the advice of the UK Secretary of State for Justice. George Dumbell
George William Dumbell QC (17 September 1804 – 13 December 1887) was a British advocate, businessman and philanthropist who was invited to become a Member of the House of Keys serving two different terms (1840–1857 and 1867–1880). Henry Loch, 1st Baron Loch
Henry Brougham Loch, 1st Baron Loch, (23 May 1827 – 20 June 1900) was a British soldier and colonial administrator. Military service Henry Loch was the son of James Loch, Member of Parliament, of Drylaw, Midlothian. He entered the Royal Navy, but at the end of two years quit it for the British East India Company's military service, and in 1842 obtained a commission in the Bengal Light Cavalry. In the First Anglo-Sikh War of 1845–1846 he was given an appointment on the staff of Sir Hugh Gough, and served throughout the Sutlej campaign. In 1852 he became adjutant of Skinner's Horse. At the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, Loch severed his connection with India, and obtained leave to raise a body of irregular Bulgarian cavalry, which he commanded throughout the war. The Manx (; gv, ny Manninee) are an ethnic group originating on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea in northern Europe. Port Erin ( gv, Purt Çhiarn, meaning ''lord's port'') is a seaside village in the south-west of the Isle of Man, in the historic parish of Rushen. It was previously a seaside resort before the decline of the tourist trade. Administratively it is designated as a village district, with its own board of commissioners. The district covers around 1 square mile, and is adjacent to: Port St Mary to the south-east; the main part of Arbory and Rushen parish district to the north and east; the sea to the west; and an exclave of Arbory and Rushen parish district (including the village of Cregneash) to the south.
