Alfred Smith (1880 – 1957) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke. Alfred Emanuel Smith (December 30, 1873 – October 4, 1944) was an American politician who served four terms as Governor of New York and was the Democratic Party's candidate for president in 1928. The son of an Irish-American mother and a Civil War–veteran Italian-American father, Smith was raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge. He resided in that neighborhood for his entire life. Although Smith remained personally untarnished by corruption, he—like many other New York politicians—was linked to the notorious Tammany Hall political machine that controlled New York City politics during his era. Alfred Wellington Smith (born February 14, 1850 - ?) was an England, English-born general merchant and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Lillooet (electoral district), Lillooet from 1889 to 1894 and Lillooet West (electoral district), Lillooet West from 1894 to 1903 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was born in Bedford and educated at the Epworth Normal School. Smith was government agent at Lillooet, British Columbia, Lillooet from 1873 to 1878 and operated as a general merchant until 1886. He married Margaret Ann Gillen in 1873. Smith was elected to the assembly in an 1889 by-election held after the death of Alexander Edmund Batson Davie. Second Lieutenant Alfred Victor Smith VC (22 July 1891 – 22 December 1915), known to his family as Victor, was a British Army officer and an English recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Smith was 24 years old, and a Second lieutenant in the 1/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, British Army on 22 December 1915 at Helles, Gallipoli, Ottoman Turkey during the First World War, and who died in action for which he was awarded the VC. His citation reads: He is buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery in the Gallipoli peninsula, although the precise location of his grave within the cemetery is not known. Alfred Leo Smith (November 6, 1919 – November 19, 2014) was a Klamath Nation drug and alcohol counselor and Native American activist from Oregon. Early life Smith was born on November 6, 1919 in Modoc Point, Oregon. He spent his early childhood on the Williamson River. At age seven, Smith was sent to a nearby Catholic boarding school at the insistence of local Indian agents. He was ultimately sent to a mix of catholic schools and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools, as far away as Beaverton, Oregon and Stewart Indian School in Nevada. After leaving Chemawa Indian School, he began to live in Portland, Oregon as an alcoholic panhandler. He was drafted during World War II and was sent to federal prison for drinking on duty. He survived a bout of tuberculosis, and experienced the 1942 death of his sister and 1950 death of his mother. Alfred Lee Smith (1838 – 2 May 1917) was a Yorkshire-born businessman from Dunedin, New Zealand. He was a member of the member of the New Zealand Legislative Council for one term from 1898 to 1905. Early life Lee Smith was born in Yorkshire in 1838. He received a private education, and was afterwards engaged at the London Stock Exchange. He came to New Zealand in 1868 and landed in Wellington. Professional career In Christchurch, Lee Smith had a brickworks. When he moved to Dunedin, he had a brickworks in Kensington. He then bought an interest in the firm Royse, Stead and Smith, grain and flour merchants. In 1881, he and William Royse bought Donaghy's Rope And Twine Company of its founder, John Donaghy, and Lee Smith became the company's chairman. The company still exists today as Donaghys. The entirety of Smith's forty-five-year career was dedicated to the railroads. He started his career as a messenger boy at the age of fourteen, earning 4 dollars a week, and became the highest-paid railroad manager in the U.S., receiving an annual salary of more than $100,000 according to one survey. After the American entry into World War I, Smith joined the federal service as the Eastern Director of the United States Railroad Administration and temporarily assumed control over the largest pool of railroads in U.S. history, carrying one half of the nation's freight.
