Alfred Ross (3 November 1816 – 18 July 1896) was a British merchant, banker and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Ross was born in London, being baptised at St. Mary Whitechapel on 30 April 1817, the son of Robert Ross, "gentleman" of Ebenezer Terrace. After being educated at a private school Alfred Ross in 1833 entered the office of Duncan Dunbar, then one of the largest export merchants and ship owners in London. Australia In November, 1841, Ross left London for Sydney to commence business on his own account and also to superintend Dunbar's affairs in Australia and Tasmania. On arriving in Sydney in March, 1842, after a passage of 140 days he entered into partnership with Alexander Campbell, of Sydney, the firm trading as general merchants but in the following year Ross dissolved the partnership, and opened business by himself in Sydney and Launceston, subsequently adding a Melbourne branch of the business. ... Alf Ross
Alf Niels Christian Ross (10 June 1899 – 17 August 1979) was a Danish jurist, legal philosopher and judge of the European Court of Human Rights (1959–1971). He is best known as one of the leading figures of Scandinavian legal realism. His debate in 1959 with the prominent British legal philosopher H. L. A. Hart – which began in the ''Cambridge Law Journal'' (Vol. 17) – was important in framing the modern conflict between legal positivism and legal realism. Biography Education and academic career Ross was born in Copenhagen as a son of civil servant Frederik Ross and graduated from high school in 1917. Ross studied law at the University of Copenhagen graduating in 1922. He consequently worked in a barrister’s office. In 1923, he commenced a study tour, which would last for two and a half years, visiting France, England and Austria, where he met and befriended fellow legal scholar, Hans Kelsen. Samuel Alfred Ross
Samuel Alfred Rosssometimes spelled Samuel Alford Ross or S.A. Ross (October 29, 1870 – December 10, 1929) was an Americo-Liberian politician and journalist who served as the 18th vice president of Liberia from 1920 to 1924 under President Charles D. B. King. Born in Greenville, Sinoe County, Liberia, he was the son of Joseph J. Ross, a native of the United States and also a former vice president of Liberia. Prior to his vice presidency, Samuel Ross served in the Senate and as the Liberia's Attorney General. He was presbyterian. After his political career, Ross was associate editor of the ''African Agricultural World'' from 1927 to 1929 and postmaster general from 1928 until his death in 1929. Alfred Clunies-Ross
Alfred Clunies-Ross (c.1851 – 28 February 1903) was a rugby union international who represented Scotland in the first international rugby match in 1871. Clunies-Ross, a Cocos Malay from a Scots family, was the first non-white rugby union international player. Early life Alfred was born around 1851 in the Cocos Islands. Of mixed Indo origin, the son of John George Clunies-Ross and S'pia Dupong from Surakarta, his father was second ruler-proprietor of the Cocos Islands, referred to by the press as the King of those islands. His elder brother George became the third ruler-proprietor of the islands. The Clunies-Ross family had originated in the Shetland Islands and both Alfred and his brothers had been sent to Scotland for education. Alfred attended Madras College. There he excelled at sport.
