Alfred Ollivant (bishop)
Alfred Ollivant (1798 – 16 December 1882) was an academic who went on to become Bishop of Llandaff. Born in Manchester, he was educated at St Paul's School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He won the Tyrwhitt Hebrew scholarship in 1822 and was elected to a fellowship at Trinity College. In 1827, he was appointed the first vice-principal of St David's College, Lampeter. Whilst at Lampeter, he found time to learn the Welsh language and he preached regularly in that language at Llangeler, where he later became vicar. He returned to Cambridge in 1843 as Regius Professor of Divinity, but in 1849 he was nominated to the see of Llandaff, primarily because of his knowledge of Wales and of the Welsh language. Ollivant was instrumental in the move to construct churches (often by private benefactions from industrialists and landowners) in the newly populated areas of his diocese. Alfred Ollivant (1874–1927) was an English novelist known best for his novel ''Owd Bob''. Ollivant also published about a dozen other novels ranging from small-scale cautionary tales to grand historical stories. Alfred Ollivant was born in Nuthurst, Sussex, in 1874 and became an author after a horse-riding injury ended his brief military career. ''Owd Bob'', his first novel, was published in 1898. Set in rural Cumbria, in northern England, the novel concerns a suspected sheepkilling collie, Bob. Even though most of the book's dialogue is written in the Cumbrian dialect, it became popular in the United States. Ollivant published a sequel, ''Danny'', in 1902. He was also a short story contributor to the magazines '' The Atlantic Monthly'' and the '' Boston Evening Transcript''. Alfred Ollivant died in London on 19 January 1927. Alfred Ollivant (4 January 1839 – 26 May 1906) was an English cricketer. Ollivant's batting style is unknown. He was born at Manchester, Lancashire. Ollivant made his first-class debut for Lancashire against Derbyshire in 1873 at the County Ground, Derby. He made a second first-class appearance in 1874 against the same opposition at Old Trafford. He scored a total of 36 runs from his two matches, with a high score of 24 not out.
