Alfred John Raymond
Alfred John Raymond (1 February 1856 – 14 October 1935) was timber merchant and politician in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was Mayor of Brisbane in 1912. Early life Alfred was born in Clifton, Bristol, England to parents Henry George Raymond and Mary Ann (née Hewland), the fifth of eight children. The family lived at 16 Camden Terrace, Clifton. Alfred like his father was a carpenter and builder by trade and was probably apprenticed to his father. Apart from this, we know little of his early life, other than that his family were staunch supporters of the Hope Chapel, a Congregational Church a few streets from their home. Alfred was a deeply devout man throughout his life and an active lay worker in the Congregational Church. Harry John Charles Diddams (26 April 1864 – 11 March 1929) was a master printer and politician in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He served two terms as List of mayors and lord mayors of Brisbane, Mayor of the City of Brisbane before its amalgamation with surrounding local authorities into City of Brisbane, Greater Brisbane in 1925. Victoria Bridge, Brisbane
The Victoria Bridge is a vehicular and pedestrian bridge over the Brisbane River. The current bridge, opened in 1969, is the third permanent crossing erected at this location. Since 24 January 2021, the bridge was closed to general traffic and carried buses, pedestrians and cyclists only. The Victoria Bridge, the Brisbane River's first road crossing has had a long and interesting history. Starr-Bowkett Society
A Starr-Bowkett Society was a co-operative, non-profit financial institution that provided interest-free loans to its members and operated on the principle of mutual self-help, as espoused in 1843 by Dr T. E. Bowkett. Popular in Australia from the late 19th century until the early to mid 20th century, they no longer exist in any form. Origins Dr. Thomas Edward Bowkett was a London surgeon, and a vocal proponent of a number of progressive and unionist ideas. His scheme to provide "mechanics" with a means to become landholders, and thus have a greater influence on government, was first proposed during a series of lectures and articles in 1843. In 1862 Richard B. Starr made some changes to Dr. Bowkett's scheme, including a slightly increased subscription fee and shorter subscription time, among others. Queensland United Party
The Queensland United Party was the name of the Queensland state branch of the Nationalist Party of Australia in the mid-1920s. Its members contested one state election under this name, the 1923 election, in which it saw limited electoral success. It was led by Charles Taylor, the MP for Windsor. The QUP gained 3 seats from its previous election result, and won a 10% swing to it in primary votes, but failed to defeat the incumbent Labor government led by Ted Theodore. Following the election, in 1925, the United Party merged with the Country Party to become the Country and Progressive National Party (or CPNP) to contest the next election.
