Alfred Dyke Acland
Colonel Alfred Dyke Acland CBE JP (19 August 1858 – 22 March 1937) was a distinguished British Army officer. The son of Sir Henry Wentworth Acland by his marriage to Sarah Cotton, Acland was educated at Temple Grove School and Charterhouse School, before being commissioned into the Royal Devon Yeomanry ( Territorial Army). He was promoted major on 10 February 1902. He reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1910 when he took up command of the Royal Devon Yeomanry. In 1915, during the First World War, he was appointed to command the Base Depot Remounts and was decorated with the Croix de Guerre. In 1917, Acland became assistant director of labour and, in 1918, was appointed the labour commandant of the Australian Corps. He was invested as a Knight of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, and as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1920. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. The Order of St John, short for Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (french: l'ordre très vénérable de l'Hôpital de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem) and also known as St John International, is a British royal order of chivalry constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria and dedicated to St John the Baptist. The order traces its origins back to the Knights Hospitaller in the Middle Ages, which was later known as the Order of Malta. A faction of them emerged in France in the 1820s and moved to Britain in the early 1830s, where, after operating under a succession of grand priors and different names, it became associated with the founding in 1882 of the St John Ophthalmic Hospital near the old city of Jerusalem and the St John Ambulance Brigade in 1887. Cecil Stafford-King-Harman
Sir Cecil William Francis Stafford-King-Harman, 2nd Baronet (6 December 1895–1987) was an Anglo-Irish landowner and soldier. He was born Cecil Stafford, the second son of Sir Thomas Stafford, 1st Baronet and his wife, Frances Agnes, daughter of Edward King-Harman. In 1933 Cecil added his mother's surname to his father's. His elder brother, Edward Charles Stafford King Harman, was killed in the First World War. Cecil graduated from University of Oxford, Oxford, receiving an Master of Arts (Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin), M.A. in agriculture in 1922. He married Sarah Beatrice Acland, daughter of Alfred Dyke Acland. Their son Thomas Edward Stafford-King-Harman (1921–1944) was killed in the Normandy Campaign. Their daughters were MI6 agent Joan Stafford-King-Harman (1918–2018) and artist Ann Stafford King-Harman (1919–1969).
