Alfred Devick
Alfred H. Devick (born 29 June 1881 – 1932) was a Swiss footballer who played as defender or as midfielder in the 1890s and early 1900s. Football career FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893 and Devick joined the club about three years later, during their 1896–97 season. Devick played his first game for the club in the away game on 13 June 1897 as Basel played a 1–1 draw with FC Bern. He scored his first goal for his club on 14 November 1897 in the home game in the Landhof as Basel won 3–1 against FC Excelsior Zürich. Devick stayed with the club for two season and he played eight games for Basel scoring at least that one goal. Following his time with Basel, Devick moved on to play for BSC Old Boys. The first edition of the official Swiss championship was played in the 1898–99 season as a knock out competition. Rudolf La Roche
Rudolf La Roche (born 1 October 1880) was a Swiss footballer who played as midfielder in the late 1890s. He was a well-known businessman and became president of the local riding school society. Football career La Roche joined FC Basel's first team for their 1897–98 season. The official Swiss national championship had not yet been called into life and so the team played only friendly games. He played his first game for the club in the friendly game away from home on 10 July 1898 as Basel won 4–1 against FC Bern. The first edition of the official Swiss championship season 1898–99 was played as a knock out competition, divided into three regional groups, an east (region Zürich), a central (regional north-west Switzerland) and west group (Romandy). Anglo-American Club Zürich (also Anglo-American F.C. Zürich) was a Swiss football club based in Zürich, who are known for being the winners of the first official national football championship (then Serie A) in 1899. The Lausanne Football and Cricket Club was a Swiss association football and cricket club. The club was founded in 1860 by English students, who had studied at private schools in the area of Lausanne. During the year of the foundation this club could be the first soccer club in Continental Europe. The worldwide first soccer club Sheffield F.C. is only three years older, however it is likely that Lausanne played cricket before football at the club (as it was more well established). It is unknown in which "football form" the Lausanne Football and Cricket Club have played, because at that time the "association football" rules still did not exist. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. As central midfielders often go across boundaries, with mobility and passing ability, they are often referred to as deep-lying midfielders, play-makers, box-to-box midfielders, or holding midfielders. There are also attacking midfielders with limited defensive assignments. The size of midfield units on a team and their assigned roles depend on what formation is used; the unit of these players on the pitch is commonly referred to as the midfield.
