Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Since 1998, the quota for election in each division, after distribution of preferences, has been 16.7% (one-sixth). George Salier
George Salier (1813 – 11 June 1892) was an Australian politician. Salier was born in 1813. In 1866 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly, representing the seat of Hobart Town. He resigned in 1869, was re-elected in 1870 and transferred to the new seat of North Hobart in 1871. Electoral District Of Hobart
The electoral district of Hobart was a multi-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It was based in Tasmania's capital city, Hobart. It was created at the 1897 election under a trial of the Hare-Clark electoral model along with the seat of Electoral district of Launceston. It continued for two terms, before being broken up again in 1903 into Central, East, North, South and West Hobart. In 1909, the entire state adopted Hare-Clark, and the Hobart region became part of the Denison division. William Guesdon
William Algernon Guesdon (6 September 1848 – 21 December 1926) JP, MLA, was an Australian businessman, politician and racing identity. Life and career He was born in Hobart on 6 December 1848. His father was William Andrew Guesdon (1816-1891), a successful Hobart merchant. He was educated at Horton College and Hobart High School. After finishing his education he left for the mainland and spent some time in Melbourne. He then returned to Hobart and joined his father's firm of W.A. Guesdon & Co. On his father's death he became a principal of Guesdon & Westbrook, a prominent firm of auctioneers in Hobart. He later became a land and estate agent. He married Elizabeth Webb in Hobart on 9 August 1871 and the couple had seven children. They divorced in 1887. Edward Miles (Tasmanian Politician)
Edward Thomas Miles (1849–1944) was a businessman and politician from Van Diemen's Land, who during his long life was variously a merchant seaman, a Free Trade Party Member of the Tasmanian Parliament, a Minister in the Braddon government, and an entrepreneur. Life Miles was born in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1849. He worked on ships trading with India, China and South Africa, and after 1879 commanded a series of ships trading the Tasmanian East Coast. He was elected to the Tasmanian lower house of Parliament, the House of Assembly, in December 1893 for the Electoral district of Glamorgan and held that electorate until 1899. In 1900 he successfully contested the Electoral district of Hobart, but resigned after a matter of weeks to pursue business interests.
