Alfred Bennett (Australian Politician)
Alfred Ernest Bennett (25 July 1906 – 15 April 1976) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1965, representing the electorate of Nepean. Bennett was born in Cargo, and educated at various Roman Catholic schools in New South Wales. He was a motor body builder and carpenter by trade. He was involved in trade unionism, being associated with the Building Workers' Industrial Union and serving as a delegate to the Labor Council of New South Wales. He also served in local government as an alderman of the City of Penrith from 1960 to 1962. Bennett was selected to contest the local seat of Nepean for Labor at the 1962 state election. An electoral redistribution had changed the long-time Liberal seat into a notional Labor seat, and Bennett won a tight race against the incumbent Liberal member, Bill Chapman. Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch)
The Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), also known as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the members of the party caucus, comprising all party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The party factions have a strong influence on the election of the leader. The leader's position is dependent on the continuing support of the caucus (and party factions) and the leader may be deposed by failing to win a vote of confidence of parliamentary members. By convention, the premier sits in the Legislative Assembly, and is the leader of the party controlling a majority in that house. Ron Dunbier
Rowland Albert "Ron" Dunbier (29 August 1914 – 23 April 1984) was an Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Nepean in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1965 to 1971. Dunbier was born in Campsie to Rowland Arthur Dunbier, a boot operator, and his wife Mary. He was educated at South Strathfield Public School and Ashfield Technical College before enlisting in the RAAF; he served in New Guinea. On his return he opened an iceworks in Liverpool and later worked as a motor dealer. In 1948 he was elected to Liverpool Council, resigning in 1953 but serving again from 1954 to 1962. He was mayor from 1949 to 1952, 1957 to 1959 and in 1962. On 21 October 1936 he married Violet; their son, Max Dunbier, was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. 1965 New South Wales State Election
The 1965 New South Wales state election was held on 1 May 1965. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1961 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Issues In May 1965, Labor had been in power for 24 years and 56-year-old Jack Renshaw, who had been seen as a generational change for the party leadership, had been premier for one year. Yet Renshaw had difficulty adjusting to a televised campaign; and his manner, the result of spending much of his early life in remote New South Wales, had limited appeal to urban voters. Bill Chapman (politician)
William Leslie Chapman (7 February 1910 – 22 July 1971) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1956 and 1962. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Chapman was born in Singleton, New South Wales. He was the son of a policeman and was raised by his grandparents in the Penrith area. He was educated to elementary level and initially worked as a porter for the New South Wales Government Railways but was retrenched during the Great Depression. He commenced a carrier business in 1934 with one truck and eventually built this into a 24-truck fleet. He was involved in community groups in the Penrith region including Rotary and the Australian Red Cross. Chapman was elected as an alderman to Penrith City Council between 1948 and 1959 and between 1961 and 1971. He was the mayor between 1950 and 1956 and between 1961 and 1968. The 1962 New South Wales state election was held on 3 March 1962. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1961 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Redistribution A redistribution of electoral boundaries was undertaken in 1961 based on that year's Australian Census. The redistribution reflected the continuing relative population shifts from the Country and Eastern suburbs of Sydney to Western Sydney and the Central Coast.
