Alfred Bayly
Alfred Bayly (20 May 1866 – 14 December 1907) was a New Zealand rugby union player and administrator, and cricketer. Early life and family Born in Waitara on 20 May 1866, Bayly was the son of Thomas Bayly and Ann Bayly (née Rundle). He was one of six brothers who represented Taranaki at cricket and rugby, including: * Frank Bayly (1860–1948), Taranaki cricket and rugby representative. * George Bayly (1856-1938), Taranaki cricket and rugby representative. President of the Taranaki and New Zealand Rugby Union. * Harry Bayly (1862–1935), Taranaki cricket representative. * Walter Bayly (1869–1950), Taranaki and New Zealand rugby representative. Waitara, New Zealand
Waitara is a town in the northern part of the Taranaki region of the North Island of New Zealand. Waitara is located just off State Highway 3, northeast of New Plymouth. Waitara was the site of the outbreak of the Taranaki Wars in 1860 following the attempted purchase of land for British settlers from its Māori owners. Disputes over land that was subsequently confiscated by the Government continue to this day. The commonly accepted meaning of the name Waitara is "mountain stream", though Maori legend also states that it was originally Whai-tara—"path of the dart". 1894 New South Wales Rugby Union Tour Of New Zealand
The 1894 New South Wales tour of New Zealand was a rugby union tour of New Zealand undertaken by the New South Wales (NSW) representative side. During the tour NSW played matches against provincial New Zealand sides, and one against a representative New Zealand team. New South Wales won four of the matches, including the inter-colonial match against New Zealand, and lost the other eight. Summary The New South Wales team, known as "Cornstalks", played their twelve tour matches in only one month. They lost all their matches against North Island sides, but in the South Island lost only one matchagainst Canterbury. Their wins in the South Island included the only match against New Zealand, which was an 8–6 victory in Christchurch. Stratford ( mi, Whakaahurangi) is the only town in Stratford District, New Zealand, Stratford District, and the seat of the Taranaki region, in New Zealand's North Island. Toko
Toko is a small rural settlement 10 kilometres east of Stratford, New Zealand, at the intersection of East Road ( State Highway 43) and Toko Road. It is located on a railway, the Stratford–Okahukura Line, the western portion of which was operated as a branch line known as the Toko Branch prior to the line's completion. The Toko Stream flows through the area to join the Pātea River. Geography Toko is surrounded by extremely fertile land, being located on the periphery of the Taranaki ringplain and adjacent to the Pātea River. The area is drained by the Toko Stream, and its tributaries the Manawaiwiri and Waiwiri Streams. Once covered in wetlands, since settlement the area has been drained to take advantage of the fertile soils. Dairy farming predominates the surrounding land use, with some sheep and beef farming in the steeper hill country. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Barney Armit
Alexander McNaughton "Barney" Armit (27 March 1874 – 12 November 1899) was a New Zealand rugby union player. He represented New Zealand on their 1897 tour of Australia, however he is best remembered for having died from injuries sustained while playing a match in 1899. He represented Otago from 1893 until his death, and played for the South Island in the Inter-Island match of 1897. Born in Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland, on 27 March 1874, Armit was the son of John Armit and Ann McNaughton. After playing for the Kaikorai Rugby Football Club from 1892, Armit was selected to represent Otago in 1893, with his first match against Canterbury. He continued to play for Kaikorai and Otago throughout the following six years, and in 1897 was selected for the South Island in the first ever Inter-Island match.
