Alfred Anderson (entrepreneur)
Alfred William Anderson (4 June 1888 – 6 August 1956) was an Australian butcher and entrepreneur. Anderson was born in East Brighton in Melbourne to butcher John Charles Anderson and Elizabeth, ''née'' Jervis, and was raised a Methodist. The family moved to Western Australia, and the younger Anderson left school at 14. He opened a butchery in Perth in 1911. On 22 June 1912 he married Elizabeth Maud Gilbert at St Luke's Anglican Church in Cottesloe. Anderson moved to Sydney in 1918 and became a sausage manufacturer, registering his own companies A. W. Anderson Pty Ltd and Anderson's Sausages Pty Ltd. By 1923, with branches across Sydney and Newcastle, he also had an interest in the Homebush Bay abattoirs, and in 1924 set up works in Lismore, Tuncester and Byron Bay. He was able to prosper during the Great Depression and acquired Queensland meatworks at Wallangarra and Karumba. Alfred Anderson (c. January 1848 – 22 March 1876) was an Australian pianist of Jewish extraction who had a promising career but died young. He married the soprano Ilma de Murska shortly before his death. History Anderson was the son of James Henri Anderson (1823 – 1 May 1879), an accomplished musician who styled himself "professor of music", and his wife Rachael Anderson (c. 1831 – 22 December 1877). J. H. Anderson had arrived in Launceston in 1842 and around 1846 moved to Hobart, where Alfred was born. Alfred Anderson (25 June 1896 – 21 November 2005) was a Scottish joiner and veteran of the First World War. He was the last known holder of the 1914 Star (the Old Contemptibles), the last known combatant to participate in the 1914 World War I Christmas truce, Scotland's last known World War I veteran, and Scotland's oldest man for more than a year. Early life Alfred Anderson was born on 25 June 1896 at 20 Kirloch Street, Dundee. He was the son of Andrew Anderson, a joiner, and Christina Thomas Emmerson. His parents married on 5 September 1888 in Chicago, Illinois, where they had two sons before returning to Scotland. The Andersons went on to have four more children, including Alfred. Alfred Walton Anderson (January 28, 1914 – June 23, 1985) was an American professional baseball shortstop who appeared in 146 Major League Baseball games for the Pittsburgh Pirates during the , and seasons. Anderson was principally known for the series of highly detailed engravings of traditional British crafts that he completed over a twenty-year period beginning in 1933. Alf Steen Andersen (15 May 1906 – 12 April 1975) was a Norwegian ski jumper. He was born in Drammen, but represented the Oslo clubs Sandaker, Skeid and Lyn. Alf Andersen (25 November 1928 - 24 June 1962) was a Norwegian flautist from Notodden, acknowledged as the leading Norwegian flautist in his time and well known through broadcasting NRK and for his leading role in Norwegian Radio Orchestra where he was solo flutist of the orchestra from the start in 1946 until his death in 1962. Biography He studied the flute under Ørnulf Gulbransen. He was employee Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg for a period (1956), and over the years also a prominent chamber musician, often with pianists Ruth Lagesen or Kirsti Hjort.
