Alphonsus Rodriguez
Alphonsus Rodríguez, SJ ( es, Alfonso) (25 July 1532 – 31 October 1617) was a Spanish Jesuit who served as a religious brother and is now venerated as a saint. He was a native of Segovia. Though his life was punctuated with personal tragedies and disappointments, his impact on the people he met was his legacy. He is not to be confused with Alphonsus (Alonso) Rodríguez, another Jesuit who wrote the ''Exercicio de perfección y virtudes cristianas'' (3 vols., Seville, 1609), which has frequently been re-edited and translated into many languages. Life and work Rodríguez was the son of a wool merchant. When Peter Faber, one of the original Jesuits, visited the city to preach, the Rodríguez family provided hospitality to the Jesuit. Faber prepared the young Rodríguez for his First Communion. Alfonso Rodríguez Olmedo
Alfonso Rodríguez Olmedo (10 March 1598 – 15 November 1628) was a Spanish Jesuit priest who was sent as a missionary among the Guarani people in Paraguay. He is honored as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church. Life Rodríguez was born in the city of Zamora, Spain on March 10, 1598. He did his novitiate in Villagarcía de Campos, Valladolid and was later sent to Paraguay. He left Lisbon, Portugal on an expedition led by Father Juan de Viana. In 1626, he was sent to the Guaycuru missions, which were in front of Asunción, on the other side of the Paraguay River. He was the first missionary to learn the local language, and his mission was to preach and to facilitate the spread of the faith and ensure decent living conditions for indigenous people. Alphonsus (Alonso) Rodriguez, SJ (1538 in Valladolid, Spain – 21 February 1616 in Seville) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and spiritual writer of renown. His writings, a single book, underline much the ascetical dimension of religious life. Life When twenty years of age he entered the Society of Jesus, and after completing his studies taught moral theology for twelve years at the College of Monterey, and subsequently filled the posts of master of novices for twelve more years, of rector for seventeen years, and of spiritual guide at Cordova for eleven years.
