Alfonso Salvador Gómez Becerra (born October 28, 1980), better known as Alfonso Gómez, is a Mexican former professional boxer. Gomez is best known for being a competitor on the debut season of reality TV show ''The Contender (television series), The Contender'', where he finished third out of sixteen fighters and instantly became a fan favorite. Gómez holds notable victories over former world champions Arturo Gatti, Jose Luis Castillo, and Peter Manfredo Jr. He has also fought household names such as Saul Alvarez, Saul Álvarez, Miguel Cotto in a World Boxing Organization, WBO world championship fight, and Shawn Porter. Personal life Gómez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, but his parents subsequently moved to the city of Oakland, California, where his boxing career began as a self-defense class due to constant bullying.
