Alfonso Almeida
Alfonso Almeida Saenz (born 12 October 1966) is a chess International Master from Mexico. International Master
FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE (''Fédération Internationale des Échecs'') for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms (performance benchmarks in competitions including other titled players). Once awarded, titles are held for life except in cases of fraud or cheating. Open titles may be earned by all players, while women's titles are restricted to female players. Elo Rating
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player whose rating is 100 points greater than their opponent's is expected to score 64%; if the difference is 200 points, then the expected score for the stronger player is 76%. Mexican Chess Championship
The national chess championship of Mexico has been organized annually since 1973 by FENAMAC ( es, Federación Nacional de Ajedrez de Mexico A.C.), the Mexican chess federation. Known since 1997 as the National Absolute Championship (''Campeonato Nacional Absoluto'') and previously as the National Closed Championship (''Campeonato Nacional Cerrado''), it was initially organized as a round-robin tournament. However, several editions in the 1990s were organized as a series of elimination tournament, elimination matches, and the championship is currently run as a Swiss-system tournament. In some years it serves as a qualifying stage for the FIDE World Chess Championship and is designated as sub-Interzonal, Zonal tournament 2.3.1 in such cases.
