Alfeiousa
Alfeiousa ( el, Αλφειούσα, before 1927: Βολάντζα - ''Volantza'') is a village in Elis (regional unit), Elis, Greece. It belongs to the municipal unit of Volakas, Elis, Volakas, in the Pyrgos, Elis, Municipality of Pyrgos. In 2011 its population was 1,037. The village is approximately 9 km southeast of Pyrgos, Elis, Pyrgos, 8 km west of Olympia, Greece, Olympia, 4 km northeast of Epitalio and 2 km south of Salmoni, Elis, Salmoni, at an altitude of 31 meters. Its residents are mainly engaged in agriculture, cultivating vines, olives and raisins. Etymology In the past, the village was called Volantza, which probably derives from the Greek word ''βῶλαξ'', meaning a lump of soil that is formed while plowing. Situated on the south bank of the river Alfeios, it was officially renamed to Alfeiousa in 1927, taking its name from the river. Volakas, Elis
Volakas ( el, Βώλακας) is a former Communities and Municipalities of Greece, municipality in Elis (regional unit), Elis, West Greece, Greece. After the administrative reform of 2011, it became a part of Pyrgos, Elis, Pyrgos. The municipal unit has an area of 70.790 km2. Its seat of administration was in the town of Epitalio. Volakas is situated on the Ionian Sea coast, southeast of Pyrgos, Elis, Pyrgos and southwest of Olympia, Greece, Olympia. The river Alfeios forms the northern border of the municipal unit. There are wooded hills in the northeastern part of Volakas, the southwestern part along the coast is flat and used for agriculture. The Greek National Road 9 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia) and the railway from Pyrgos to Kalamata run through Volakas. Operations at the small airport of Epitalio (ICAO: LGEP) have been suspended. Elis or Ilia ( el, Ηλεία, ''Ileia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Here lie the ancient ruins of cities of Elis, Epitalion and Olympia, known for the ancient Olympic Games which started in 776 BC. Pyrgos ( el, Πύργος, meaning "tower") is a city in the northwestern Peloponnese, Greece, capital of the regional unit of Elis and the seat of the Municipality of Pyrgos. Epitalio ( el, Επιτάλιο, before 1927: Αγουλινίτσα - ''Agoulinitsa'') is a town and a community in Elis (regional unit), Elis, Greece. It was the seat of the former municipality of Volakas, Elis, Volakas, which was merged into the Pyrgos, Elis, municipality of Pyrgos under the major administrative reform of 2011. Salmoni ( el, Σαλμώνη, before 1915: Κούκουρα - ''Koukoura'') is a village and a community in the municipality of Pyrgos, Elis, Greece. According to the 2011 census, the village had 612 inhabitants and the community, including the village Alfeios, 643. It is situated in low hills on the right bank of the river Alfeios, at 70 m elevation. It is 2 km southwest of Strefi, 3 km southeast of Varvasaina and 8 km east of Pyrgos. The Greek National Road 74 ( Tripoli - Olympia - Pyrgos) passes north of the village. A previously independent community, Salmoni is part of Pyrgos since 1997. Alfeios
The Alfeiós or Alpheios ( el, Αλφειός, grc, Ἀλφειός, Latin Alpheus) is the main stream of the Alpheios Valley drainage system, a dendritic type, originating on the north slopes of Mount Taygetus, located in the center of the Peloponnesus of Greece, and flowing to the northwest to the vicinity of Olympia, where it turns to the west and, after being impounded by the Flokas Dam, a hydroelectric facility, empties into the Gulf of Kyparissia of the Ionian Sea south of Pyrgos. The entrance into the gulf through agricultural land and across an unpopulated, sandy beach partially blocked by a spit is hydrologically unspectacular, with the water too shallow to be navigable by any but the smallest craft. The concept of a single source has little meaning for most of the rivers of Greece, which begin as a confluence of multiple springs in the mountain valleys.
