Alexandru Lahovary
Alexandru Lahovary ( ro, Alexandru N. Lahovari; August 16, 1841 – March 4, 1897) was a member of the Romanian aristocracy, a politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Justice, Minister of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Property, Minister of Public Works and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kingdom of Romania. Life and political career Alexandru Lahovary was the brother of Ioan Lahovary, who served as foreign minister within the Royal government, and General Iacob Lahovary, who also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and later Minister of War. He was born to the noble boyar family of Nicolae and Eufrosina Lahovary from Râmnicu Vâlcea (maybe related to the House of Lackovic). After being tutored by private teachers, he moved to Paris to teach. In Paris, he also completed his doctoral studies in 1865. Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (October 30, 1845 in Toulouse – December 12, 1916 in Paris), was a French sculptor, medallist and painter. Biography Mercié entered the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and studied under Alexandre Falguière and François Jouffroy, and in 1868 gained the Grand Prix de Rome at the age of 23. His first great popular successes were the ''David'' and '' Gloria Victis'', which was shown and received the Medal of Honour of the Paris Salon. The bronze was subsequently placed in the Square Montholon. The bronze ''David'' was one of his most popular works. The Biblical hero is depicted naked with the head of Goliath at his feet like Donatello's David, but with a turbanned head and sheathing his long sword. Alexandru Lahovari National College ( ro, Colegiul Național Alexandru Lahovari) is a high school located at 19 General Praporgescu Street, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Romania. History The school opened as a gymnasium in September 1891. Initially offering just one grade, it expanded to four by 1894. In 1899, it was named after the late statesman Alexandru Lahovary. At the turn of the 20th century, the school was located in the old seminary on the grounds of the cathedral. As this was inadequate, a new building was started in 1909 and finished in 1911; Nicolae Ghica-Budești was the architect.
