Alexandra Williams
Alexandra Williams is an American former rugby union player. She represented the at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 Rugby World Cup's. Williams helped set up the Women's Premier League. She played for Harvard-Radcliffe RFC, Beantown RFC and for Berkeley All Blues. Williams made her first appearance for the Eagles at the 1993 Canada Cup. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. 1994 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 1994 Women's Rugby World Cup was the second world cup for women. It was originally scheduled to be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands (April 10–24) but was cancelled only weeks before. However, a replacement competition was organised around the same dates in Scotland. England beat the defending champions USA 38–23 in the final. Background The official reason for the cancellation was that the event organisers failed to get official endorsement of the event as the "Women's World Cup" from the International Rugby Board (IRB). The minutes of the 1993 Interim meeting of the IRB state the following about the "1994 Women's International Tournament": :"The Council agreed to defer consideration of participation by member unions in the tournament until such time as a formal request is received from the organizers." 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup was the first world cup fully sanctioned by the International Rugby Board (IRB) and the third Women's Rugby World Cup in history. The tournament took place in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands and was the first women's world cup held outside of the United Kingdom. The tournament saw a record 16 teams compete and heightened media attention. There was no qualification process, teams taking part by invitation from the IRB. New Zealand defeated the United States 44–12 in the final. Several matches in the tournament were filmed for television and a one-hour TV highlights programme was produced by IMG. 2002 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 2002 Women's Rugby World Cup was the second World Cup fully sanctioned by the sports governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The tournament was held in Barcelona, Spain. The formatThere are 16 teams at the IRB Women's World Cup 2002. They are divided into four Pools of four teams each, according to each team's seeding. For the first set of matches the highest seeded team plays the lowest seeded team whilst the two mid-seeded teams play each other. After the first round of matches the positions in each Pool are recalculated with the winners of the first matches in first and second places, and the losers in third and fourth places. In the second set of matches, the top two teams and the bottom two teams from each Pool play each other. The final Pool standings are calculated from the results of these matches to give the final four positions in each Pool. Women's Premier League Rugby
The USA Rugby Women's Premier League (WPL or WPL Rugby) is the top annual American women's rugby union competition. It is player-run and operates in partnership with USA Rugby. It involves the top 10 clubs in the country. The league was founded in 2009. The League initially began from 8 different Division 1 Women's Sides coming together in 2009. In 2017, the League grew to 10 clubs. In 2023, the League reduced their club numbers to 7. The 2020 Season was canceled on June 1, 2020 due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Berkeley All Blues
The Berkeley All Blues are a women's rugby union club based in Berkeley, California. They were founded in 1978 and are founding members of the Women's Premier League Rugby. They field three teams throughout the year, in the WPL, Division II, and in Sevens. The All Blues have won a total of 16 National Championships, they include the 2011 and 2012 Women's Premier League Championships and the 2011 and 2013 Women's Club 7s National Championships. 1996 Canada Cup
The 1996 Canada Cup was the second edition to take place and was hosted by Edmonton. It was a women's rugby union competition and featured New Zealand, France, the USA and the hosts, Canada. New Zealand had missed the previous World Cup in 1994 and, aside from a couple of games against an untried Australia, had played no international rugby since 1991, when they had lost to the USA in the World Cup semi-finals. Canada Cup 2000 was the third Canada Cup competition in women's rugby hosted in Winnipeg. The hosts, Canada, brought together the new World Champion New Zealand alongside runners-up USA and third placed England.
