Alexander Zeldin
Alexander Zeldin (born 24 April 1985) is a British dramatist, author, and theatre director. Career Zeldin made work in Russia, South Korea and the Middle East as well as at the Naples Festival, before, between 2011-2014, developing a number of his own works as a teacher at East 15 Acting School, where he met several of the actors and creative team that collaborate with him today. At this time, he also worked as an assistant director to Peter Brook and Marie-Helene Estienne. His critically acclaimed play, Beyond Caring, which told the story of several temporary workers meeting on a night shift in a meat factory, had its World Premiere at the Yard Theatre in Hackney in 2014, before transferring to the Temporary Theatre at the National Theatre in 2015. In 2015 he was the recipient of the Quercus Trust Award and was appointed as Associate Director at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Playwright
A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays. Etymology The word "play" is from Middle English pleye, from Old English plæġ, pleġa, plæġa ("play, exercise; sport, game; drama, applause"). The word "wright" is an archaic English term for a craftsman or builder (as in a wheelwright or cartwright). The words combine to indicate a person who has "wrought" words, themes, and other elements into a dramatic form—a play. (The homophone with "write" is coincidental.) The first recorded use of the term "playwright" is from 1605, 73 years before the first written record of the term "dramatist". It appears to have been first used in a pejorative sense by Ben Jonson to suggest a mere tradesman fashioning works for the theatre. Yard Theatre
The Yard Theatre is a theatre and music venue in a converted warehouse in Hackney Wick in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It programmes theatre and performance, late-night music events, and manages two community centres where it runs work with young people and its local community. History The Yard was founded by Artistic Director Jay Miller in 2011, with support from Tarek Iskander, Sasha Milavic Davies and Alex Rennie. They worked with architectural firm Practice Architecture to convert a disused warehouse into a theatre and bar. ''Love'' (stylized as ''LOVE'') is a 2016 British play written by Alexander Zeldin. It is about a group of families who have been placed in temporary accommodation in the run-up to Christmas. Production history The play premiered in the Dorfman Theatre at the National Theatre, London running from 6 December 2016 to 10 January 2017, before transferring to The Studio at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 26 January to 11 February 2017. The production later transferred the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch from 25 to 28 October 2018. A BBC film adaptation was first broadcast on BBC 2 on 8 December 2018.
