Alexander Yersin (entomologist)
Jean-Alexandre-Marc Yersin (5 April 1825, in Morges – 2 September 1863, in Lavaux) was a Swiss entomologist. Jean-Alexandre-Marc Yersin was a teacher and entomologist. His entomological interests included Dermaptera and Orthoptera. The grasshopper species Yersinella Raimondi was so named in his honour in 1860. Yersin had three children with his wife, Fanny Moschell. He died three weeks before the birth of Alexandre Emile Jean Yersin, who became famous for discovering the causative agent of the plague, the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The renowned son developed his interest in biology at the age of eight, finding and inspecting his father's collection of insects. Morges
Morges (; la, Morgiis, plural, probably ablative, else dative; frp, Môrges) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Vaud and the seat of the district of Morges. It is located on Lake Geneva. History Morges is first mentioned in 1288 as ''Morgia''. It was known by its German name ''Morsee'' though that name is no longer used. Prehistory There were several prehistoric settlements along what is now the Morges lakefront. The largest and best known, ''Grande-Cité'', was occupied in the late Bronze Age. One of the wooden objects at Grande-Cité has been dendrochronologically dated to 1031 BC. Many of the stilts and building structures have been preserved in situ. A dugout of oak was discovered near the settlement and in 1877 half of it was recovered and placed in the Musée d'histoire et d'art in Geneva. Lavaux
Lavaux () is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, in the district of Lavaux-Oron. Lavaux consists of 830 hectares of terraced vineyards that stretch for about 30 km along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Geneva. Although there is some evidence that vines were grown in the area in Roman times, the actual vine terraces can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. It benefits from a temperate climate, but the southern aspect of the terraces with the reflection of the sun in the lake and the stone walls gives a mediterranean character to the region. The main wine grape variety grown here is the Chasselas. World Heritage site Under cantonal law, the vineyards of Lavaux are protected from development. Alexandre Yersin
Alexandre Emile Jean Yersin (22 September 1863 – 1 March 1943) was a Swiss- French physician and bacteriologist. He is remembered as the co-discoverer of the bacillus responsible for the bubonic plague or pest, which was later named in his honour: ''Yersinia pestis''. Another bacteriologist, the Japanese physician Kitasato Shibasaburō, is often credited with independently identifying the bacterium a few days earlier, but may have identified a different bacterium and not the pathogen-causing plague. Yersin also demonstrated for the first time that the same bacillus was present in the rodent as well as in the human disease, thus underlining the possible means of transmission.
