Alexander William Williamson
Prof Alexander William Williamson FRS FRSE PCS MRIA (1 May 18246 May 1904) was an English chemist. He is best known today for the Williamson ether synthesis. Life Williamson was born in 1824 in Wandsworth, London, the second of three children of Alexander Williamson (originally from Elgin) a clerk with the East India Company and his wife, Antonia McAndrew, daughter of a prominent London merchant. Despite early physical infirmity, the loss of sight in one eye and a largely useless left arm, Williamson grew up in a caring and stimulating intellectual environment. After an early childhood spent in Brighton and then schools in Kensington, Williams enrolled at the University of Heidelberg in 1841. After working under Leopold Gmelin at Heidelberg, he transferred to the University of Giessen to work with Justus von Liebig, where he received his PhD in 1845. Alexander Williamson (missionary)
Alexander Williamson (5 December 1829 – September 1890) was a Scottish Protestant missionary to China with the London Missionary Society. He was known for his scholarship and translation work as well as founding of the Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge Among the Chinese or the Christian Literature Society for China). He was the predecessor to Timothy Richard as head of this society. Missionary experiences Williamson was born in Falkirk, Scotland. He was the eldest of seven sons. As a young man he worked at a large mercantile establishment. After this work he attended Glasgow University with the aim of going to China as a missionary. He completed his arts and theological studies, and offered himself to, and was accepted by, the London Missionary Society for the mission field in China. Alexander Watt Williamson
Alexander Watt Williamson (1849 – 2 August 1928) was a New Zealand schoolteacher. In 1874 he became the first person to receive a degree from a New Zealand university. He received the first and only degree issued by the University of Otago before it merged into the University of New Zealand (which in 1961 was dissolved into four independent universities and two associated agricultural colleges). Later, in 1876, Williamson was reissued a Bachelor of Arts degree certificate from the University of New Zealand. Born in 1849 near Coventry, Warwickshire, England, Williamson emigrated to New Zealand with his parents in 1851. After completing his university studies, Williamson became a schoolteacher, first at Turakina School (1874–1881) and then at Patea. In 1892 he was appointed headmaster of Taita School in Lower Hutt, where he remained until retiring in 1911. Williamson died at his son's residence in Puketaha, near Hamilton, on 2 August 1928.
