Alexander Stewart (British Army Officer)
Major-General Alexander Stewart (c. 1739 – 16 December 1794) was a Scottish officer in the British Army and a politician. Military career Born the second son of John Stewart MP (died 1769) of Castle Stewart, and brother of William Stewart MP, Stewart was commissioned as an ensign in the 37th Regiment of Foot on 8 April 1755. He commanded a field force at Orangeburg and fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs during the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Third Foot on 7 July 1775 ; Colonel in the army on 16 May 1780 ; and promoted Major-General on 28 April 1790. Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway ( – 24 September 1773) was a Scottish aristocrat. Early life Alexander was the eldest son of Lady Catherine Montgomerie and James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway, a Commissioner of the Scottish Treasury and Privy Councillor of Scotland who opposed the Union between England and Scotland. He had three younger brothers, Lt.-Gen. Hon. James Stewart (an MP for Wigtown Burghs and Wigtownshire), Capt. Hon. William Stewart (also an MP for Wigtown Burghs), and Hon. George Stewart, who died while a student at Edinburgh University. Alexander Turney Stewart (October 12, 1803 – April 10, 1876) was an American entrepreneur who moved to New York and made his multimillion-dollar fortune in the most extensive and lucrative dry goods store in the world. Stewart was born in Lisburn, Ulster, Ireland, and abandoned his original aspirations of becoming a Presbyterian minister to go to New York City in 1823. He spent a short time teaching before returning to Ireland to receive the money his grandfather had left him, purchase some Belfast linens and laces, and return to New York to open a store. Stewart had extraordinary skill in business, and by 1848 he had built a large marble-fronted store on Broadway between Chambers Street and Reade Street, which was devoted to the wholesale branch of his business. Alexander Stewart (died 1593) was a Scottish courtier and diplomat. He was a younger son of Alexander Stewart of Scotstounhill, a captain of Blackness Castle, and Elizabeth Hamilton. Blackness Castle The older Alexander Stewart's record as captain of Blackness for the Scottish crown was a subject of comment by Richard Bannatyne. In March 1572, during the Marian Civil War, he surrendered the castle to the supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots, for 300 crowns, after his expenses had not been met by the King's side. In January 1573, he was made captain again, and pledged his eldest son as hostage for his good service. Unfortunately, while he was making these arrangements in Edinburgh, one of his prisoners, James Kirkcaldy bribed the guards and took Blackness. Kirkcaldy then managed to capture Alexander Stewart and his brother John and locked them up in their own castle. Alexander Doig Stewart
Alexander Doig Stewart (January 27, 1926 - August 12, 1999) was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts from 1970 to 1984. Education Stewart was born in 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Scottish parents, Alexander Doig Stewart and Catherine Muir Smith, who had emigrated from Aberdeen. He studied at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and worked for some time in the MIT Acoustics Lab for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. He then studied at Harvard College and graduated with an honors degree in 1948. He choose to study theology at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City but later transferred his studies to the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Alexander Stewart (died 1915) was a Scottish minister, who was principal of St Andrews University. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1911. Life He was born in Liverpool. He was professor of divinity at St Andrews University. Alexander Stewart (1477 – 19 December 1537) was a Scottish prelate; also known as Alexander Stewart of Pitcairn. He was the son of Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany, and his first wife Catherine Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney and Earl of Caithness. The marriage of his parents was dissolved in 1478 and his father remarried, but it was not until 1516 that an act of parliament made the marriage unlawful and ensured that Alexander Jr. would be regarded as legally illegitimate and unable to inherit his father's title. His high birth, however, enabled a successful career in the church. He held Inchaffray Abbey from 1514, and Scone Abbey from 1518 ''in commendam''.
