Alexander R. François
Alexander R. François (1820 - May 21, 1869) was a state legislator who served in the Louisiana State Senate during the Reconstruction era from 1868 until his murder in 1869. Biography François was born in 1820 in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. He worked as a planter, butcher and merchant and worked for the ''New Orleans Tribune''. He was elected to serve in the Louisiana State Senate in 1868 as a Radical, and he served until his death in 1869. He was murdered by two white men who remained unpunished for the crime. He was beaten for a long time with clubs in his own store in St. Marin and left to die. He was taken to New Orleans where he sued the sheriff of St. Martin and his brothers and a nephew for assault and battery. He died of lockjaw in immense pain on May 21, 1869. Louisiana State Senate
The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. The senate is the judge of its members' qualifications and elections. All candidates for a senate seat in a district run in a nonpartisan blanket primary and in a runoff if necessary. John Randall (politician)
John Randall (died May 8, 1869) was a state legislator who served in the Louisiana State Senate during the Reconstruction era. Biography Randall was a member of the 1868 Republican State Convention and was made a member of the ''State Central Committee'' representing Concordia Parish along with John S. Harris. He was unanimously nominated to stand to fill the senate seat left by John S. Harris who had resigned to move on to serve as a United States Senator for Louisiana. Randall, a Republican, was elected to serve in the Louisiana State Senate and was sworn in on September 15, 1868. Later the same week senator Blackman, a Democrat, called for John Randall to be removed and that the election be declared unconstitutional, null and void. More than 1,500 African American officeholders served during the Reconstruction era (1865–1877) after passage of the Reconstruction Acts in 1867 and 1868 as well as in the years after Reconstruction before white supremacy, disenfranchisement, and the Democratic Party fully reasserted control in Southern states.
