The Alexander Maconochie Centre is an Australian prison, prison in the Australian Capital Territory, which detains maximum security, minimum security and Remand (detention), remand prisoner, inmates, both male and female. It is located in Hume, Australian Capital Territory, Hume, Australian Capital Territory. The facility is operated by ACT Corrective Services, an government agency, agency of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, Government of the Australian Capital Territory. Hume, Australian Capital Territory
Hume is a suburb of Canberra in the Jerrabomberra (district), District of Jerrabomberra. The suburb is named after the explorer Hamilton Hume and streets are named after Australian industrialists and businessmen. Hume is a light-industrial suburb and there is no significant housing development. At the , Hume had a population of 395, up from six in 2006, as a result of the construction of the Alexander Maconochie Centre. Colin Winchester
Colin Stanley Winchester (18 October 1933 – 10 January 1989) was an assistant commissioner in the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Winchester commanded ACT Police, the community policing component of the AFP responsible for the Australian Capital Territory. In 1989 he was assassinated by an unknown perpetrator. David Eastman
David Harold Eastman (born 29 September 1945) is a former public servant from Canberra, Australia. In 1995, he was wrongfully convicted of the murder of Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. A 2014 judicial inquiry recommended the sentence be quashed and he should be pardoned. On 22 August of the same year, the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory quashed the conviction, released Eastman from prison, and ordered a retrial. Eastman sought leave to the High Court to appeal against the decision for a retrial. His appeal was unsuccessful, and a retrial commenced on 18 June 2018. Monaro Highway
Monaro Highway is a highway in Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory, in Australia, linking in Victoria to Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) via the Monaro region. Belconnen Remand Centre
Belconnen Remand Centre, or BRC, was an Australian remand custody facility located in Belconnen, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. The centre opened in 1976 and closed in 2009. At times, it held a small number of illegal immigrants. When it was first established in 1976, the Belconnen Remand Centre was intended to hold around 16 people. The centre's construction had been considered and approved by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's Cabinet in 1973. Four men escaped the remand centre in July 1988 through a roof in the exercise yard. In December 1992, then ACT Attorney-General Terry Connolly flagged that the remand centre should be replaced, due to its outmoded architecture and the high operating costs identified at the time.
