Alexander Keiller (archaeologist)
Alexander Keiller (1 December 1889 – 29 October 1955) was a Scottish archaeologist, pioneering aerial photographer, businessman and philanthropist. He worked on an extensive prehistoric site at Avebury in Wiltshire, England, and helped ensure its preservation. Keiller was heir to the marmalade business of his family, James Keiller & Son that had been established in 1797 in Dundee, and exported marmalade and confectionery across the British Empire. He used his wealth to acquire a total of of land in Avebury for preservation, where he conducted excavations and re-erected some standing stones. He also pioneered aerial photography for archaeological interpretation. At Avebury, Keiller founded the Morven Institute of Archeological Research, now the Alexander Keiller Museum. In 1943 he sold the land at Avebury to the National Trust for its agricultural value only. Alexander Keiller Museum, Avebury
Avebury () is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in southwest England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary pagans. Constructed over several hundred years in the third millennium BC, during the Neolithic, or New Stone Age, the monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. Its original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony. The Avebury monument is a part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby, including West Kennet Long Barrow, Windmill Hill and Silbury Hill. Alexander Keiller (businessman)
Alexander Keiller (1 July 1804, Dundee – 27 March 1874 Gothenburg) was a Scottish businessman active in Gothenburg, Sweden. Keiller arrived in Gothenburg in 1825, on account of the Keiller family's timber business in Sweden. Three years later he started a mill for machine spinning of flax and hemp, along with his compatriot William Gibson. This enterprise was shut down in 1839. In 1841 Keiller opened a heavy engineering plant in Gothenburg, as a private company. In 1867 Keiller floated Göteborgs Mekaniska Verkstad on the stock exchange, and a year later he retired completely from the workshops. He died in Gothenburg on 27 March 1874 . Alexander Keiller FRSE LLD (11 November 1811 – 26 September 1892) was a Scottish physician and gynaecologist who served as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh 1875–77. Life Alexander Keiller was born in Arbroath on 11 November 1811 the fourth child of John Keiller (born 1768), a merchant and his wife, Isabella Anderson. He qualified LRCSE in 1833, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh shortly afterwards. He graduated MD from the University of .St. Andrews in 1835 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) in 1849. He set up in medical practice in Dundee, but after seven years moved to Edinburgh, where he soon established a large practice, specialising in midwifery and the diseases of women and children.
