Alexander Gardner (October 17, 1821 – December 10, 1882) was a Scottish photographer who immigrated to the United States in 1856, where he began to work full-time in that profession. He is best known for his photographs of the American Civil War, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, and of the conspirators and the execution of the participants in the Lincoln assassination plot. Early life Alexander was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on 17 October 1821. He became an apprentice jeweler at the age of 14, lasting seven years. Gardner was raised in the Church of Scotland and influenced by the work of Robert Owen, Welsh socialist and father of the cooperative movement. By adulthood he desired to create a cooperative community in the United States that would incorporate socialist values. In 1850, Gardner and others purchased land near Monona, Iowa for this purpose, but Gardner never lived there, choosing to return to Scotland to raise more money. Alexander Gardner (soldier)
Alexander Haughton Campbell Gardner, also known as Gordana Khan ( fa, ; pa, ਗੋਰਦਾਨਾ ਖ਼ਾਨ; 1785–1877), was a Scottish-American traveller, soldier, and mercenary. He travelled to Afghanistan and Punjab and served in various military positions in the region. Details of his life remain obscure, though several colourful accounts have been written. Although corroborating evidence is sparse, Scottish historian John Keay wrote biographies in 1977, 1979, and, most thoroughly, ''The Tartan Turban: In Search of Alexander Gardner'', in 2017. Biography By Gardner's (also spelled Gardiner) own accounts he was born in Wisconsin to a Scottish father and Anglo-Spanish mother. Baron von Hügel met Gardner in 1835 and claimed he was Irish. Alexander Gardner (April 28, 1861 – June 18, 1926) was a Canadian Major League Baseball catcher who played one game for the Washington Nationals of the American Association in 1884. Gardner started his only game on May 10, 1884 and caught Ed Trumbull, who was also making his first major league start, in a matchup against the New York Metropolitans. At the plate, Gardner recorded no hits in three at bats. Alexander Gardner (1877 – 1952) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a right half. Career Born in Leith, Gardner played for local club Leith Athletic then moved to Newcastle United at the end of 1899, making over 300 appearances in the English Football League and FA Cup over the next decade. He won three League titles: 1904–05, 1906–07 and 1908–09 (plus the 1907 Sheriff of London Charity Shield in 1907), and played in three FA Cup finals in 1905, 1906 and 1908, though finishing on the losing side in all of them; he had retired through injury by the time the club first claimed the trophy in 1910.
