Alexander Floyd
Alexander Geoffrey Floyd (1 April 1926 – 12 December 2022) was an Australian botanist with an expert knowledge of rainforest plants, particularly the rainforest trees of New South Wales. He has worked with the New South Wales Forestry Commission, the Department of Forestry in Papua-New Guinea, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales. He helped create the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden at Coffs Harbour. Two genera and several species of plants are named in his honour; including ''Floydia'', ''Alexfloydia'', and ''Endiandra floydii''. Floyd died on 12 December 2022, at the age of 96. Floydia
''Floydia'' is a monotypic species of tree in the family Proteaceae native to Australia. It is a somewhat rare tree found only growing in the rainforests of southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. The sole species is ''Floydia praealta'' which is commonly known as the ball nut or possum nut. The tree has a superficial resemblance to the closely related ''Macadamia'' and could be confused with them. The fruit of ''F. praealta'' is poisonous. The species was formally described in 1862 by Victorian Government Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller based on plant material collected near the Clarence River in northern New South Wales and the Brisbane River in Queensland. In his publication '' Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae '' Mueller named the plant ''Helicia praealta''. Endiandra Floydii
''Endiandra floydii'' is a small-sized rainforest tree. Despite its common name, Crystal Creek walnut, this tree is unrelated to northern-hemisphere walnuts, and is a laurel. It is named after the Australian botanist, Alexander Floyd. Habitat The Crystal Creek walnut is restricted to paleozoic metamorphics but with overlying basalt soils in the Mount Warning area of New South Wales, and a couple of adjacent areas in Queensland. The Crystal Creek walnut grows in rainforest and is also found as an understorey plant in brush box ecotone areas, on moderately steep slopes no higher than 430 metres above sea level. Alexfloydia
''Alexfloydia'' is a genus of perennial stoloniferous grasses in the panic grass subfamily of the Poaceae grass family. This genus is endemic to coastal eastern New South Wales in Australia. There is one known species, ''Alexfloydia repens''. This genus was named in honour of the species discoverer, Australian botanist Alexander Floyd (1926-). Habitat and distribution ''Alexfloydia repens'' is a spreading, mat-forming grass found on the margins of brackish and tidal waterways in areas flooded by unusually high tides (called "king tides"). The species forms a groundcover associated with the tree species ''Casuarina glauca'' and the Endangered Ecological Community Swamp Oak Floodplain Forest. Coffs Harbour is a city on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, north of Sydney, and south of Brisbane.
