Alexander Findlay (politician)
Alexander Findlay (25 November 1844 – 2 February 1921) was a Scottish Liberal Party politician and industrialist. He founded Alexander Findlay & Company, a structural engineering company based at Parkneuk Works, Motherwell, in 1888. A prominent figure in local business and political life, he served as Provost of Motherwell 1901–1904. Alexander Findlay, KH (c. 1784 – 9 May 1851) was a British Army officer and colonial governor. Alexander George Findlay
Alexander George Findlay (1812–1875) was an English geographer and hydrographer. His services to geography have been compared with those of Aaron Arrowsmith and August Heinrich Petermann. Life Findlay was born in London, 6 January 1812, a descendant of the Findlays of Arbroath, Forfarshire. His grandfather was a shipowner there, who moved his business to the River Thames. Findlay's father, Alexander Findlay was one of the original fellows of the Royal Geographical Society. The son Alexander George Findlay devoted himself to the compilation of geographical and hydrographical works. On the death of John Purdy, the hydrographer, in 1843, he took a leading position. In 1844 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and was a member of its council and committees. His researches in meteorology attracted the attention of Robert FitzRoy. Alexander Hamburg "Alex" Findlay (April 21, 1866 – April 16, 1942) was a Scottish-American golf course architect, professional golfer, golf club maker, and promoter of the game of golf in the United States of America. Findlay was the manager of the golf department at Wright & Ditson Sporting Goods store in Boston, Massachusetts. He was labeled the "Father of American Golf" by his promoters at Wanamaker's Department Store in the 1910s and 1920s. He was a tireless advocate for the growth of the game in the United States. Personal life Findlay was born at sea in the English Channel in 1866, the son of Alexander and Mary Ann Milne Findlay. Findlay's father was a Sergeant in the British Army and the family was on the way to Gibraltar when Alex was born. Alex Finlay
Alexander Finlay (14 November 1887 – 2 March 1963) was an Australian politician. Born in the South Yarra neighborhood of Melbourne, Victoria, he moved to Adelaide, South Australia as a child and attended school there until the age of twelve. He then became a carriage painter like his father. He married at age twenty-two and had three children. In 1918 Finlay enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving in France and Great Britain. After his discharge in 1919, he returned home to Bowden, a suburb of Adelaide. There he joined The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. In the 1920s and 1930s he held several offices in the Australian Natives' Association and in a coachmakers' union later known as the Vehicle Builders' Employees' Federation of Australia. He eventually became president of the coachmakers' union, and then from 1934 to 1944 general secretary of its South Australian branch.
