Alexander Bay, Newfoundland And Labrador
Alexander Bay Station was a Canadian settlement in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community contained a store as well as a telegraph and express office in 1911. It was in Bonavista District and was situated on the Clarenville Branch of the Newfoundland Railway. It was located 181 miles from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's, 50 miles from Clarenville, west of Glovertown. The post office began on April 1, 1949, and was closed by September 13, 1966. The bay was previously named Bloody Bay or Bloody Reach, after a conflict between European settlers and the Beothuk, but was later renamed after local merchant William Alexander. Alexander Bay, Northern Cape
Alexander Bay () is a town in the extreme north-west of South Africa. It is located on the southern bank of the Orange River mouth. It was named for Sir James Alexander, who was the first person to map the area whilst on a Royal Geographical Society expedition into Namibia in 1836. (It is mistakenly believed by many locals that it was he who first established commercial copper mining in the area.) With diamonds being discovered along the West Coast in 1925, Alexander Bay was established to service the mining industry. The town of Oranjemund lies on the northern bank of the river, which forms the international border with Namibia. The two towns are linked by the Ernest Oppenheimer Bridge, named for Ernest Oppenheimer in 1951. The town is served by Alexander Bay Airport. Alexander Bay Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve.
