Alex Varney
Alexander Varney (born 27 December 1984) is an English Association football, footballer who came through Charlton Athletic's academy and played in the Football League for Barnet F.C., Barnet. Varney was born in Farnborough, London, Farnborough, in the London Borough of Bromley. He began his football career as a scholar with Charlton, and earned a professional contract in 2003, which was extended in 2004. A forward (association football), forward, he was called up for Germany at youth level and spent time on loan at Barnet F.C., Barnet, for whom he made his Football League debut on 21 January 2006 as an 88th-minute substitute (association football), substitute in the Football League Two, League Two goalless draw against Wycombe Wanderers F.C., Wycombe Wanderers. In association football, a substitute is a player who is brought on to the pitch during a match in exchange for an existing player. Substitutions are generally made to replace a player who has become tired or injured, or who is performing poorly, or for tactical reasons (such as bringing a striker on in place of a defender). A player who has been substituted during a match takes no further part in the game, in games played under the standard International Football Association Board Laws of the Game. Substitutions were officially added to the Laws of the Game in 1958. Orpington is a town and area in south east London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley. It is 13.4 miles (21.6 km) south east of Charing Cross.
