Alex Shackell is an American swimmer and 2024 Summer Olympics team member for the United States. Shackell qualified at the 2024 US Olympic Swimming Team Trials where she placed sixth in the 200m freestyle. Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. Nicholas Shackell
Nicholas Shackell (also Nick) (born 31 October 1974) is a former freestyle swimmer from Great Britain. Swimming career Nicholas competed in the 100 metre freestyle at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, finishing 28th fastest overall. He finished 8th as a member of the relay squad in the final of the 4×100 metre freestyle relay, but the 4×100 metre medley relay team was disqualified in the preliminaries. He represented England winning three bronze medals in the relay events, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Four years later he represented England again and won a silver and bronze in the relay events, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. The men's 100 metre freestyle event at the 1996 Summer Olympics took place on 22 July at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, United States. There were 60 competitors from 54 nations. Nations had been limited to two swimmers each since the 1984 Games. The event was won by Alexander Popov of Russia, the third man to successfully defend an Olympic title in the 100 metre freestyle (after Duke Kahanamoku in 1912 and 1920 and Johnny Weissmuller in 1924 and 1928). Gary Hall, Jr. returned the United States to the podium in the event after a one-Games absence. Gustavo Borges, the silver medalist in 1992, earned bronze.
