Alex Herman
Alexander Leo Herman (May 10, 1899 – December 13, 1975) was an American Negro league outfielder in the 1920s and 1930s, and was the scout who discovered Baseball Hall of Famer Satchel Paige. He would later become the first African-American elected official in Alabama since the 19th century. Biography A native of Mobile, Alabama, Herman attended Tuskegee University. While playing and scouting for the Chattanooga Black Lookouts in 1925, Herman discovered Satchel Paige, a younger player who had a hometown connection to Herman from Mobile. Herman himself went on to play for the Memphis Red Sox in 1932. He later became active in Democratic politics, eventually being elected to the Mobile County Democratic Committee. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). These numbers are shorthand designations useful in baseball scorekeeping and are not necessarily the same as the squad numbers worn on player uniforms. Alexis Margaret Herman (born July 16, 1947) is an American politician who served as the 23rd U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton. Herman was the first African-American to hold the position. Prior to serving as Secretary, she was Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.
