Alex Cohen
Alexandra "Alex" Cohen (born July 8, 1972) is an American radio and Emmy Award winning television journalist, roller derby skater, and author. Early life Cohen was born in New York City and moved to California at the age of two. She studied at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, Brown University (B.A. in Eastern Religions, 1993), and University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (Master of Journalism). Cohen is the daughter of Kip Cohen, a former American arts and entertainment executive, concert presenter, record company executive and God-daughter of American rock concert promoter Bill Graham. Her brother is musician Chris Cohen. Roller Derby
Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who uniquely wears a star on the helmet) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Los Angeles Derby Dolls
The L. A. Derby Dolls (LADD) is Los Angeles' original women's quad-skate banked track roller derby league. It was founded in October 2003 by Rebecca Ninburg (a.k.a. Demolicious) and Wendy Templeton (a.k.a. Thora Zeen). The league is composed of more than 120 women divided into five teams who skate on a banked track. LADD plays real, unscripted roller derby with rules and referees. Like most modern roller derby, the league is do-it-yourself and 100% skater run. It is all volunteer work; there are no paid athletes. The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only thirteen banked track leagues in the United States. Interlochen ( ') is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Grand Traverse County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Counterpoint LLC was a publishing company distributed by Perseus Books Group launched in 2007. It was formed from the consolidation of three presses: Perseus' Counterpoint Press, Avalon Publishing Group's Shoemaker & Hoard and the independent Soft Skull Press.
