Aleksey Pavlenko (born March 6, 1995 in St. Petersburg) is a Russian freestyle skier, specializing in moguls. Pavlenko competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics for Russia. He placed 12th in the first qualifying round in the moguls, not advancing. He then finished 6th in the second qualifying round, moving on to the final. In the first run of the final, he placed 16th, failing to advance. Pavlenko made his World Cup debut in December 2012. Mogul Skiing
Mogul skiing is a freestyle skiing competition consisting of one timed run of free skiing on a steep, heavily moguled course, stressing technical turns, aerial maneuvers and speed. Internationally, the sport is contested at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Moguls are a series of bumps on a piste formed when skiers push snow into mounds as they do sharp turns. This tends to happen naturally as skiers use the slope but they can also be constructed artificially. Once formed, a naturally occurring mogul tends to grow as skiers follow similar paths around it, further deepening the surrounding grooves known as troughs. Since skiing tends to be a series of linked turns, moguls form together to create a bump field. The term "mogul" is from the Bavarian/Austrian German word ''Mugel'', meaning "mound, hillock". Freestyle Skiing At The 2014 Winter Olympics – Men's Moguls
The men's moguls event in freestyle skiing at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia took place on the 10 February at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi. The defending Olympic is Alexandre Bilodeau, while the defending world champion was Mikaël Kingsbury also of Canada. Bilodeau and Kingsbury took gold and silver, respectively. Alexandr Smyshlyaev of Russia won the bronze medal. Bilodeau became the first freestyle skiing gold medalist to defend his Olympic title, and first repeat gold medalist. The FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup is an annual freestyle skiing competition arranged by the International Ski Federation since 1980. Currently six disciplines are included in world cup: moguls, aerials, ski cross, halfpipe, slopestyle and big air. In the 1980s and 1990s there were also ski ballet and combined, which no longer exist.
