Alec Brook
Alec Brook (1911-1986) was a male English international table tennis player. Table tennis career He won a bronze medal in the 1933 World Table Tennis Championships in the Swaythling Cup (men's team event) with Adrian Haydon, David Jones, Andrew Millar and Edward Rimer for England. He appeared 500 times in exhibition matches at the London Palladium with Viktor Barna. Personal profile He was a chairman of the sports company Motif tie manufacturers ADB London Ltd which he established in 1946. He died in 1986. World Table Tennis Championships
The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. In the earlier days of the tournament, Hungary's men's team was a dominant force, winning the championships 12 times. This was followed by a short period of dominance by Japan in the 1950s. Table Tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Adrian Haydon
Arthur 'Adrian' Haydon (1911 – 12 September 1973) was a male international table tennis player from England. Table tennis career He started playing table tennis aged just 7 years-old. During the 1927-28 season he was world ranked 6. He won fourteen medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships from 1928 to 1953, including a gold medal at the 1953 World Table Tennis Championships in the Swaythling Cup (men's team event). Personal life He married international player Doris Jordan in 1938. He is the father of Ann Haydon Jones, a finalist at the World Table Tennis Championships and a Grand Slam winner in tennis. He also played for the Warwickshire County Cricket Club 2nd XI. The London Palladium () is a Grade II* West End theatre located on Argyll Street, London, in the famous area of Soho. The theatre holds 2,286 seats. Viktor Barna
Viktor Győző Barna (Braun) (24 August 1911 – 27 February 1972) was a Hungarian and British champion table tennis player as well as a record five times singles World Champion. He won 41 World Championship medals and also won 20 English Open titles. Personal life Barna's birth name was Győző Braun, but, because of anti-Semitism in Hungary at the time, he changed his name to a Hungarian-sounding name. In September 1939, during the outbreak of the Second World War, he and his wife were in America. Barna returned to Europe, in order to fight against the Nazis. He joined the British army as a parachutist, and fought in Yugoslavia. After the British withdrew from Yugoslavia, Barna remained in England. After the war he settled with his wife in London. He became a British national in 1952. Later he became a representative for the Dunlop Sports Company and continued traveling the world in this capacity.
