Aldis Lamp
Signal lamp training during World War II A signal lamp (sometimes called an Aldis lamp or a Morse lamp) is a semaphore system using a visual signaling device for optical communication, typically using Morse code. The idea of flashing dots and dashes from a lantern was first put into practice by Captain Philip Howard Colomb, of the Royal Navy, in 1867. Colomb's design used limelight for illumination, and his original code was not the same as Morse code. During World War I, German signalers used optical Morse transmitters called ', with a range of up to 8 km (5 miles) at night, using red filters for undetected communications. Modern signal lamps produce a focused pulse of light, either by opening and closing shutters mounted in front of the lamp, or by tilting a concave mirror. They continue to be used to the present day on naval vessels and for aviation light signals in air traffic control towers, as a backup device in case of a complete failure of an aircraft's radio. ...

Austrian Lightning Detection & Information System
ALDIS (Austrian Lightning Detection & Information System) is a sensor network in Austria for the detection and localization of lightning discharge occurring during thunderstorms. In addition to the location of the strike point, the associated peak current is also estimated. ALDIS is a member of the pan-European lightning detection projecEUCLID (EUropean Cooperation for LIghtning Detection). ALDIS was initiated in 1991. Project partners are the OVE (Austrian Electrotechnical Association) and APG (Austrian Power Grid). The detection of lightning, either from cloud-to-ground or within the cloud is accomplished by eight sensors of type LS7002 (Vaisala), which are distributed across the Austrian territory. The performance of a lightning location system is best described by the main performance parameters detection efficiency (DE), location accuracy (LA), and classification accuracy (CA). In a study by Schwalt et al. (2020) based on data from a high speed video camera and an electric ...
