	Aldersbach Aldersbach ( bar, label=Central Bavarian, Oidaschbo) is a municipality in the district of Passau in Bavaria in Germany. The former Cistercian Aldersbach Abbey, of which the Baroque church remains, is located in the village. There is also a brewery with museum. Aldersbach has around 4,500 inhabitants. Geography Geographic setting Aldersbach is located in the Donau-Wald region in the Vils valley, some ten kilometers south west of Vilshofen an der Donau, 30 km west of Passau, 25 km north of Pfarrkirchen and 15 km south of Osterhofen. A stream, the Aldersbach (Bach = stream), flows through the town. Not least in the context of tourism, the region bounded by Aldersbach and Fürstenzell is often referred to as ''Klosterwinkel'' (''Abbey Corner''). 	Aldersbach Abbey Aldersbach Abbey (german: Kloster Aldersbach) is a former Cistercian monastery in the community of Aldersbach in the Passau (district), district of Passau in the valley of the Vils (Danube), Vils, Lower Bavaria, Germany. History It was founded in 1127 by Saint Otto of Bamberg, Otto, Bishop of Bamberg, as a community of Augustinians, Augustinian Canons, on a site near a church consecrated in 880 by Englmar, Bishop of Passau, in honour of Simon Peter, Saint Peter. In 1146 Egilbert, the successor of Otto, gave the foundation and a new church of Our Lady to the Cistercians, and after the departure of the canons, Abbot Sefried, with monks from Ebrach Abbey, took possession. Under Cistercian rule Aldersbach flourished for more than six centuries. It was famous for the rigour of its religious discipline and exerted a wide influence. 	Vils (Donau) The Vils is a river in Bavaria, Germany, it is a right tributary of the Danube. The Vils is formed by the confluence of its two source rivers, the Kleine Vils and the Große Vils, in Gerzen. It is long ( including ''Große Vils''). 	Passau (district) Passau is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the southeast of Bavaria. It encloses the city of Passau geographically from two sides. Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Rottal-Inn, Deggendorf, Freyung-Grafenau. To the south it borders Austria. History Archaeological findings prove that the area was settled more than 7000 years ago. In 1971 the district was created by merging the previous districts Wegscheid, Vilshofen, Griesbach (Rottal) and parts of the districts Pfarrkirchen and Eggenfelden. The city's original name was Batava (also known as Batavia) in Roman times. Passau survived three major fires, the biggest one being the all-destructive fire from 1662. After much of the city had burned down, bishops rebuilt it in Baroque style.
