Albro Lake, Nova Scotia
Albro Lake is a neighbourhood in the North End of the community of Dartmouth in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. The neighbourhood includes the Highfield Park and Crystal Heights. A newer development Lancaster Ridge is built on the former Department of National Defence housing lands. Albro Lake is bounded by Leaman Drive to the west, Lancaster Ridge to the east, Highway 111 to the north, and Albro Lake Road to the south. The streets are named for aircraft used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. History Albro Lake takes its name from the shallow freshwater lakes of the same name located in the area. The lakes were named for the brothers John and Samuel Albro, who used the stream that flowed from the lakes to operate a nail factory and tannery on their property near St. Paul's Church on Windmill Road. Halifax Explosion
On the morning of 6 December 1917, the French cargo ship collided with the Norwegian vessel in the waters of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The ''Mont-Blanc'', laden with high explosives, caught fire and exploded, devastating the Richmond district of Halifax. 1,782 people were killed, largely in Halifax and Dartmouth, by the blast, debris, fires, or collapsed buildings, and an estimated 9,000 others were injured. The blast was the largest human-made explosion at the time, releasing the equivalent energy of roughly . Dartmouth North Community Centre
Dartmouth North Community Centre is a Community centre in Albro Lake a neighbourhood in the north end of the community of Dartmouth in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. Albro Lake is also known as District 9. The DNCC The Dartmouth North Community Center was officially opened on March 22, 1996, at its past location on 134 Pinecrest Drive. The Centre is now located at 105 Highfield Park Drive in Dartmouth. The center was created through a cooperative effort between the municipal, provincial, federal governments through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Work Program, which allotted $1.7 million to build the facility and created twenty jobs at the time of the centre's initial opening. Naval Radio Station Albro Lake
Naval Radio Station Albro Lake (NRS Albro Lake) was a naval radio station operated by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Established in 1942 surrounding Albro Lake, then several kilometres north of the town of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. NRS Albro Lake was divided into two locations: the primary receiving site was located on the grounds of NRS Albro Lake, and its primary transmitting site was located at NRS Newport Corner, 50 kilometres northwest (NRS Newport Corner being a sub-unit of NRS Albro Lake). NRS Albro Lake also had secondary transmitting capabilities for forwarding along transmissions it received. Its callsign was CFH and it was constructed for $6 million. It could receive from (and transmit to, through NRS Newport Corner) locations halfway across the world and stretching from Murmansk, Russia to the Falkland Islands. John Albro
John Albro (May 6, 1764 – October 23, 1839) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Halifax Township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1818 to 1826. He was also a Lieutenant-Colonel of the 4th Regiment of Halifax militia. He was born in Newport Township, Nova Scotia, the son of Samuel Albro and Jane Cole, who had come from Rhode Island. He was buried in the Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia). Background Albro operated a tannery in Halifax, later operating as a butcher and then a hardware merchant. In 1793, he married Elizabeth Margaret Vandergrift. He married Elizabeth Margaret Dupuy in 1803. He helped establish the Fire Insurance Association of Halifax in 1809. Albro was a grand master in the freemasons. He also served as a road commissioner and fire warden for Halifax and reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the local militia. Nova Scotia Highway 111
Highway 111 is a controlled-access highway in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada. Highway 111 varies in width from 4-12 lanes and is known colloquially as the Circumferential Highway, or, more recently, "the Circ", because it forms a partial orbital road around Dartmouth. The highway runs from Pleasant Street in the neighbourhood of Woodside in the south to the A. Murray MacKay Bridge in the north. It serves as a key transportation link for Dartmouth and Halifax. The section from Highway 118 (Woodland Avenue) to the MacKay Bridge was constructed at the same time as the bridge, opening in 1970.
