Carlos Albizu Miranda (16 September 1920 – 6 October 1984) is the first Hispanic educator to have a North American University renamed in his honor and one of the first Hispanics to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in the United States. Early years Albizu Miranda, cousin of the Puerto Rican Nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos, was born in Ponce, the second largest city in Puerto Rico located in the southern region of the island. Daniela Albizu Berasategi (Urrugne, Lapurdi, 23 May 1936 - Bayonne, 26 February 2015) was a Basque-speaking teacher, writer, and councillor. She dedicated her entire life to the Basque language and culture. Biography Her father was from Alava and her mother from Guipuzcoa, having emigrated to Urrugne. Albizu developed a particular attachment to her mother tongue, Basque, after being prohibited from speaking it at school. Albizu taught at the Maurice-Ravel College in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. In addition to teaching French and Spanish, she devoted herself to teaching Basque. She promoted the initiative of Basque classes on the Gure Irratia radio station in Bayonne and was president of the Basque Studies Society. Héctor Manuel Valdez Albizu (born November 10, 1947) is the current Governor of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, a position he first held from 31 August 1994 through 16 August 2000, and again since 17 August 2004. Olga Albizu Rosaly (1924–2005) was an abstract expressionist painter from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Albizu Rosaly was the first woman dedicated to abstraction in Puerto Rico. Life Albizu was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where she studied painting with the Spanish painter Esteban Vicente from 1943 to 1947. She received a B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico in 1946. In 1948 she moved to New York City on a fellowship for post-graduate work at the Art Students League, where she studied under Morris Kantor, Carl Holty, and Vaclav Vytlacil. She also studied with Hans Hofmann and subsequently became his apprentice. After that, she did further studies in Europe at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. Later, she spent a year painting in the Provence, as painters such as Van Gogh and Cézanne had done before her. In 1953 she returned to New York.
