Geert Egberts Boer
Geert Egberts Boer was the docent of what became Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1876 to 1902. Boer was born in Roderwolde, in the Netherlands and graduated in 1864 from the theological school in Kampen. Afterwards he joined the ministry. In 1873, Boer was called to Grand Rapids, Michigan and in 1876, the Synod of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, Christian Reformed Church appointed him the first professor of their newly established theological school. Using his own books and a curriculum modeled on the one used in Kampen, Boer opened the school which later became Calvin Theological Seminary and its offshoot Calvin College. Boer is also noted for encouraging the growth of Christian primary education. In 1986, the Boer-Bennink residence hall was opened in Calvin College named after Boer because of his significant contributions to Christian education, the Christian Reformed Church, and Calvin College. Calvin University, formerly Calvin College, is a private Christian university in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1876, Calvin University is an educational institution of the Christian Reformed Church and stands in the Reformed (Calvinist) tradition. Known as Calvin College for most of its history, the school is named after John Calvin, the 16th-century Protestant Reformer. History The Christian Reformed Church in North America founded the school on August 4, 1876, as part of ''Calvin College and Theological Seminary'' (with the seminary becoming Calvin Theological Seminary) to train church ministers. The college and seminary began with seven students, in a rented upper room on Spring Street, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The initial six-year curriculum included four years of literary studies and two years of theology. The President of Calvin University is the chief executive officer of the school. The office is not as old as Calvin University (Michigan), Calvin University, which had no need for such a position when it was founded in 1876. When the ''Theological School of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, Christian Reformed Church'' opened in 1876, it had one teacher, instructor. As other instructors joined the staff, the title Rector (academia), Rector was applied to the person in charge of daily affairs, while the title of docent was applied to all other faculty (teaching staff), faculty. When the literary curriculum was added in 1894, the head of the Literary section went by the title of Principal (university), Principal. The office of University President, College President was created in 1918 to replace the office of Principal.
