Alberta Prairie Steam Tours
Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions is a heritage railway originating in Stettler, Alberta. The train runs between Stettler and Big Valley. The trips last five to six hours, with a stopover (all excursions include a buffet meal). Many trains are pulled by No. 41, a 1920 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive, and sometimes by CN U-1-f No. 6060, a Montreal Locomotive Works 4-8-2. On days when the steamers are not running, the railroad operates diesel switcher SW-1200 number 1259 and GMD GMD1 number 1118. Until the end of the railroad's 1999 season, it also operated on the route to Coronation, Alberta, which is now abandoned. Equipment No. 41 was built in December, 1920 for the Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad, and was there assigned the "41" number. This type of steam locomotive is commonly known as the Mountain type. Overview The Colony of Natal in South Africa and New Zealand were innovators of the Mountain wheel arrangement. The Rocky Mountain Rail Society (RMRS) is a registered nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to the preservation of Canadian National Railway steam locomotive 6060, ''The Spirit of Alberta''. Their goal is to ensure that ''The Spirit of Alberta'' remains in full and complete operating condition for the enjoyment of steam rail fans. The Mississippian Railway is a short line railroad operating from Amory, Mississippi, to Fulton, Mississippi. It is owned and operated by the Itawamba County Railroad Authority. The MSRW interchanges with the BNSF Railway at Amory, Mississippi. The MSRW's shops are also located in Amory. History The Mississippian Railway was established in 1923 primarily to haul lumber products from Fulton south to the interchange with the Frisco Railway in Amory. In 1944 a bentonite plant was built in Smithville to take advantage of a large deposit discovered there which led to a surge in business for the line and its nickname ''The Bentonite Road''. By 1968 the bentonite deposits near Smithville had been depleted and the plant closed, however several industries had moved to Fulton and continued to provide traffic for the railroad. Jonesboro, Lake City And Eastern Railroad
The Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad (JLC&E) was a short-line railroad that operated in Mississippi and Craighead County of northeast Arkansas. This railroad received a charter from the State of Arkansas on April 7, 1897, and track construction between Jonesboro and Blytheville began soon thereafter. History The initial push to construct the JLC&E came from timber owners and land speculators in northeast Arkansas, all of whom saw the availability of railroad transportation as a necessary ingredient to harvesting timber. By the time the railroad was completed in the summer of 1901, several large sawmills were either in operation or being built along the tracks. In early 1911, the JLC&E was purchased by Robert E. Lee Wilson, a prominent landowner who resided in Wilson, Arkansas. Coronation is a town in east-central Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by the County of Paintearth No. 18. It is located at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 872, approximately west of the Saskatchewan border. History Coronation was incorporated as a village on December 16, 1911, the year George V came to the throne hence its chosen name, then was officially declared a town on April 29, 1912. The GMD GMD1 is a diesel locomotive originally produced by General Motors Diesel (GMD), the Canadian subsidiary of General Motors Electro-Motive Division, between August 1958 and April 1960. This road switcher locomotive is powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 567C diesel engine, capable of producing . The GMD1 was built on either Flexicoil A1A-A1A (for light-rail prairie branchlines) or Flexicoil B-B trucks. An EMD SW1200 is a 4 axle diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1954 and May 1966. Power is provided by an EMD 567C 12-cylinder engine which generates . Additional SW1200 production was completed by General Motors Diesel in Ontario, Canada, between September 1955 and June 1964. 737 examples of this locomotive model were built for U.S. railroads, 287 were built for Canadian railroads, 4 were built for Brazilian railroads, 25 were built for a Chilean industrial firm, and 3 were built for the Panama Canal Railway. A switcher, shunter, yard pilot, switch engine, yard goat, or shifter is a small railroad locomotive used for manoeuvring railroad cars inside a rail yard in a process known as ''switching'' (US) or ''shunting'' (UK). Switchers are not intended for moving trains over long distances but rather for assembling trains in order for another locomotive to take over. They do this in classification yards (Great Britain: ''marshalling yards'').
