Albert Young Hassell
Albert Young Hassell (15 November 184120 September 1918) was a prominent Australian pastoralist and politician. Born in Albany, on 15 November 1841, Albert was the second son of pastoralist John Hassell who had pioneered the area around Kendenup in the Great Southern region of Western Australia in 1840. The young Albert was educated at a private school in Albany leaving at age 11 to work on the family farm. Working on the property Albert Hassell eventually became manager of another of his father's properties near Jerramungup from 1861 to 1863. He became the first European to overland to Esperance during the time. From 1864 to 1878 Albert and his brother, John Frederick Hassell, ran the family businesses. Hassell ran for parliament and won a by-election representing the seat of Albany in the colony's first part-elective Legislative Council from 1871 to 1874; after the term expired he resigned from the post. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. Muiriantha
''Muiriantha'' is a genus of plant containing the single species ''Muiriantha hassellii'' and is endemic to the south coast of Western Australia. It is a small shrub with branchlets covered sparsely in hairs, leathery leaves and yellowish-green pendulous flowers. Description ''Muiriantha hassellii'' is a small under shrub to high with branchlets sparsely covered in soft, thin, separated, star-shaped hairs. The leaves are arranged alternately, aromatic, upright, narrowly elliptic, long, leathery, smooth and sparsely covered in soft hairs. The fragrant inflorescence are terminal on branches, tubular long, pendulous with small to medium sized bracts. The 5 yellowish-green petals are narrowly oblong to elliptic, rounded at the end, with a purple or green centre stripe, pedicels long and soft and weak hairs toward the petals apex. Ferdinand Von Mueller
Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller, (german: Müller; 30 June 1825 – 10 October 1896) was a German-Australian physician, geographer, and most notably, a botanist. He was appointed government botanist for the then colony of Victoria (Australia) by Governor Charles La Trobe in 1853, and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. He also founded the National Herbarium of Victoria. He named many Australian plants. Early life Mueller was born at Rostock, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. After the early death of his parents, Frederick and Louisa, his grandparents gave him a good education in Tönning, Schleswig. Memorial Park Cemetery also known as Pioneer Cemetery and Old Albany Cemetery is a cemetery located along Middleton Road in the city of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was constructed in 1836 and is the first consecrated cemetery in Western Australia, gazetted in 1840 as a public burial ground to provide for the needs of a growing community. It was closed as a public cemetery in 1959, with a few burials being held there until 2000 and ashes placed there until 2009. Most burials now being held at Allambie Park Cemetery. Albany Masonic Hall
The Albany Masonic Hall, also known as Plantagenet Lodge, is a heritage listed building located at 58–60 Spencer Street, on the corner of Earl Street, on the south western slopes of Mount Clarence in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The Albany Lodge, the Lodge of St John, was the first Masonic lodge to erect a hall in Western Australia. It is also the only one still under the English Constitution. The land was bought in 1872 for the sum of £30. The first hall was built on the site in 1873 but was demolished in 1903 to make way for the new hall. Weld Club
The Weld Club is a private male-only social club in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1871 as a gentlemen's club, it is named after Frederick Weld, the chronologically first patron of the club and the Governor of Western Australia at the time. Building , the club occupies a building designed by Talbot Hobbs and constructed in 1892 by the Bunning Brothers, the founders of Bunnings, for the organisation. It is situated at the corner of The Esplanade and Barrack Street, immediately across the street from Stirling Gardens. Albany Club (Western Australia)
The Albany Club also known as the Aberdeen House is a heritage listed building located on Aberdeen Street in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. In Western Australia, only the Weld Club in Perth is older than the Albany gentlemen's club, which was established in 1894. No private club outside the metropolitan area has occupied the same building for so long. John Moir, who served as the mayor of Albany for four terms, built a new residence on Aberdeen Street in 1886; his wife died shortly before the residence was completed. Moir, who was also a founding member of the Albany Club, let it be used as a club facility from 1895 until 1939 when the club acquired the building.
