Albert Wren
Albert Wren (December 9, 1916 – November 1, 1961) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal-Labour member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1951 to 1961 for the northwestern Ontario riding of Kenora. Background He was born in Fort William, Ontario, but his family soon moved to the town of Ignace, a small railway community. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas as an officer during World War II. After the war he worked as the town clerk in Sioux Lookout until he was elected as an MPP. He and his wife Mary raised two daughters. Politics Wren ran as a Liberal-Labour candidate in 1948 provincial election but was defeated by the Progressive Conservative candidate James George White by 957 votes. The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (french: Parti progressiste-conservateur de l'Ontario), often shortened to the Ontario PC Party or simply the PCs, colloquially known as the Tories, is a centre-right political party in Ontario, Canada. John Wintermeyer
John Joseph Wintermeyer (December 4, 1916 – December 20, 1993) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1955 to 1963 who represented the riding of Waterloo North. From 1958 to 1963 he served as leader of the Liberal party. Background Wintermeyer was born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario. His parents were Alfred and Caroline Wintermeyer. He attended University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and graduated with a degree in Commerce and Philosophy in 1939. He then went to Harvard Law School and later Dalhousie Law School. He became a lawyer and returned to his home town to begin his practice. In 1949 he established his own firm which became known as Wintermeyer Askin Casey Smith. Arthur Reaume
Arthur John Reaume (November 30, 1906 – December 13, 1981) was a Canadian politician. Background Reaume was born at Sandwich, Ontario in 1906. Politics He was elected to the town council of Sandwich in 1930 and became mayor of Sandwich in 1933. He sat on Windsor city council after Sandwich became part of Windsor. Reaume succeeded David Croll as Windsor mayor in 1941, becoming the 22nd mayor of the city, and was reelected in 1948. In the municipal election of 1950, it appeared that Thomas Brophey had defeated Reaume by 38 votes but, after a recount, Reaume was declared the winner by 16 votes and served until 1954. Reaume is also Windsor's longest-serving mayor, at 13 years. He ran as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in the 1943 election but was defeated by the CCF. Farquhar Oliver
Farquhar Robert Oliver (March 6, 1904 – January 22, 1989) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. Oliver was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a United Farmers of Ontario Member of the Legislative Assembly in the 1926 provincial election at the age of 22. Oliver was re-elected as a UFO MLA in the 1929 election and was the sole (and last) United Farmers member in the legislature until 1941. In that year, he formally joined the Ontario Liberal Party and the cabinet of Premier Mitchell Hepburn as Minister of Public Works and Welfare after informally supporting the Liberals and attending their caucus meetings since 1934. 1951 Ontario General Election
The 1951 Ontario general election was held on November 22, 1951, to elect the 90 members of the 24th Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, led by Leslie Frost, won a fourth consecutive term in office, increasing its caucus in the legislature from 53 in the previous election to 79—a solid majority. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Walter Thomson, lost six seats, but regained the role of official opposition because of the collapse of the CCF vote. 1948 Ontario General Election
The 1948 Ontario general election was held on June 7, 1948, to elect the 90 members of the 23rd Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, led by George Drew, won a third consecutive term in office, winning a solid majority of seats in the legislature—53, down from 66 in the previous election. Despite winning a majority, Drew lost his own seat to temperance crusader Bill Temple. Instead of seeking a seat in a by-election, Drew left provincial politics to run for, and win, the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservative Party. Drew was replaced as Ontario PC leader and premier by Thomas Kennedy on an interim basis, and then by Leslie Frost.
