Albert Washington McIntire
Albert Wills McIntire (January 15, 1853 – January 31, 1935) was an American Republican politician. He was the ninth Governor of Colorado from 1895 to 1897. In 1896 Governor McIntire sent the Colorado National Guard to Leadville due to violence at the Coronado Mine during a strike by the Western Federation of Miners. Early in 1896, McIntire rejected a last-minute insanity defense appeal of the Park County rancher Benjamin Ratcliff, who murdered three members of his local school board with whom he had quarreled over the education of this three children. After McIntire refused to intervene, Ratcliff was hanged at the Colorado State Penitentiary at Cañon City. Joseph Helm
Joseph Church Helm (June 30, 1848 – May 13, 1915) was a jurist from Colorado. He served as a Colorado state representative, a Colorado state senator, and as an associate justice and chief justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. He ran for governor in 1892 and was defeated by Davis Hanson Waite. At the age of 13, he enlisted as a drummer boy in the Union Army during the Civil War. Over four years, he saw numerous battles and then was a captured and held at the Belle Isle Prisoner Camp, when he was released in 1863, he became private. He stayed in the war until its end, when he was 17 years of age. He saved his pay from his service to pay for his college education. Cañon City is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Fremont County, Colorado, United States. Colorado State Penitentiary (commonly abbreviated CSP) is a Level V maximum security prison in the U.S. state of Colorado. The facility is part of the state's East Cañon Complex, together with six other state correctional facilities of various security levels. Description CSP is located in Fremont County, just east of the county seat Cañon City, Colorado. It is one of 25 prisons in the Colorado Department of Corrections system, and one of seven in and around Cañon City.
