Albert W. Hawkes
Albert Wahl Hawkes (November 20, 1878May 9, 1971) was a United States senator from New Jersey. Studies He was born in Chicago on November 20, 1878. He attended the public schools and graduated from Chicago College of Law in 1900, gaining admission to the bar the same year. He studied chemistry at Lewis Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) for two years and engaged in the chemical business. Businessman During the First World War, Albert Hawkes served as director of the Chemical Alliance in Washington, D.C. (1917–1918). From 1927 to 1942, Hawkes served as president of Congoleum-Nairn, Inc., at Kearny, New Jersey. He assumed chairmanship of the corporation board in 1937. He was president and director of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States in 1941 and 1942, a member of the Newark Labor Board, and a member of the Board to Maintain Industrial Peace in New Jersey 1941-1942. The National War Labor Board, commonly the War Labor Board (NWLB or WLB) was an agency of the United States government established January 12, 1942 by executive order to mediate labor disputes during World War II. History The NWLB was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under Executive Order 9017, with William Hammatt Davis as its chair. It was charged with acting as an arbitration tribunal in labor-management dispute cases in order to prevent work stoppages which might hinder the war effort. Howard Alexander Smith
Howard Alexander Smith (January 30, 1880October 27, 1966) was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Republican Party, he served as a United States Senator from New Jersey from 1944 to 1959. He was the uncle of Peter H. Dominick, who was a Senator from Colorado (1963–1975). Early life and education H. Alexander Smith was born in New York City to Abram Alexander and Sue Lehn (née Bender) Smith. His father was a physician and teacher. He attended the Cutler School in New York, and then enrolled at Princeton University in New Jersey. At Princeton, he studied jurisprudence, political science, and English common law under Woodrow Wilson. Arthur Walsh (February 26, 1896December 13, 1947) was an American civil servant, businessman, soldier and World War I veteran, who served as the junior United States senator from New Jersey from November 26, 1943 to December 7, 1944. William Warren Barbour
William Warren Barbour (July 31, 1888November 22, 1943) was an American Republican Party politician who represented New Jersey in the United States Senate from 1931 to 1937 and again from 1938 until his death in office in 1943.
