Albert W. Ferguson
The Albert W. Ferguson House is a house located in Astoria, Oregon, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Albert W. Ferguson (August 29, 1821 – February 21, 1891) was an Oregon carpenter and architect. He built many now-historic houses and other buildings in Oregon, particularly in Salem and Astoria. He moved to Astoria in 1876. While living in Astoria, he designed and built several homes and other buildings, including the first city hall, built in 1878, and the NRHP-listed Capt. J. H. D. Gray House. His youngest son, James Ernest Ferguson, built his father's house, but Albert W. collaborated with his son on the house's design. James Ernest Ferguson later partnered with Charles Houston to found Ferguson & Houston, an Astoria architectural and construction firm. Astoria, Oregon
Astoria is a port city and the seat of Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. Founded in 1811, Astoria is the oldest city in the state and was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. The county is the northwest corner of Oregon, and Astoria is located on the south shore of the Columbia River, where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean. The city is named for John Jacob Astor, an investor and entrepreneur from New York City, whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site and established a monopoly in the fur trade in the early 19th century. Astoria was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 1876. The city is served by the deepwater Port of Astoria. Transportation includes the Astoria Regional Airport. Eastlake Movement
The Eastlake movement was a nineteenth-century architectural and household design reform movement started by British architect and writer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906). The movement is generally considered part of the late Victorian period in terms of broad antique furniture designations. In architecture the Eastlake style or Eastlake architecture is part of the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture. Eastlake's book ''Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details'' posited that furniture and decor in people's homes should be made by hand or machine workers who took personal pride in their work. Manufacturers in the United States used the drawings and ideas in the book to create mass-produced Eastlake Style or Cottage furniture. Astoria City Hall (old)
The Old Astoria City Hall, now known as the Clatsop County Historical Society Heritage Museum, is a historic building located in Astoria, Oregon, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building served as the city hall of Astoria from 1905 until 1939. It was the first location of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, from 1963 to 1982, and has been the Heritage Museum since 1985. History as city hall The first Astoria city hall was designed and built in 1878 by Albert W. Ferguson. His son's firm of Ferguson & Houston also built the second building, located at 16th and Exchange streets, but the building's design was by Emil Schacht. Emil Schacht
Emil Schacht (November 20, 1854 – March 4, 1926) was a prominent architect in Portland, Oregon. Schacht's work was prolific from the 1890s until World War I and he produced commercial buildings including factories and warehouses as well as residential projects, hotels and theatres. He is known for his craftsman architecture stlyle homes and was a founding member of the 1902 Portland Association of architects. In Portland Schacht's firms included Emil Schacht & Son, and designed the Wheeldon Apartments in Portland: a 5-story brick Tudor Revival apartment building in Downtown Portland. The building became known as the Admiral Apartments in the 1970s and has also been known as the Admiral Hotel Apartments. It was built in 1909 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
