Albert Toll
Albert Frederick Toll (1865-1960) was the founder of Australia and New Zealand's largest transport company, Toll Group and Toll NZ and a former mayor of Wickham, New South Wales. He founded Toll in 1888, when he hauled coal with a horse and a cart. Dora Birtles
Dora Birtles (; 1904–1992), was an Australian novelist, short-story writer, poet and travel writer. Life Dora Toll was born in 1903 in Wickham, New South Wales, a suburb of Newcastle, the sixth daughter of Albert Frederick Toll and Hannah (née Roberts).''The Feminist Companion to Literature in English'', eds Virginia Blain, Patricia Clements and Isobel Grundy (London: Batsford, 1990), p. 95. She was ahead of her time in studying at the University of Sydney in a period when few women received a tertiary education. However, she was suspended in 1923 for a poem appearing in the literary magazine ''Hermes'', which describes post-coital bliss. Her future husband, poet and journalist Bert Birtles, was expelled for a still more explicit poem in the same issue of ''Hermes'' describing their tryst on the roof of the university quadrangle. The Toll Group is an Australian-based subsidiary of Japan Post Holdings with operations in transportation, warehousing and logistics in road, rail, sea and air. It has two divisions; Global Forwarding, Global Logistics. History In 1888, Albert Toll began a horse-and-cart coal hauling business in Newcastle. The Toll business was purchased by National Minerals in 1959. In 1962 it was purchased by mining conglomerate Peko-Wallsend. Wickham is an inner suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located from Newcastle's central business district. Toll was elected president; R. G. Gardiner, commodore; Dr Blumer, vice-commodore; and J. G. Biddlecombe, secretary and handicapper. At the annual general meeting in September 1933 members voted to erect a clubhouse at Belmont at a cost of £500. Wins by LMYC yachts ''Irene'', co owned by Harry and Bill Hughes, won the 1953 Sydney to Noumea Yacht Race on handicap.
