Albert Pfluger
Albert Pfluger (13 October 1907, Oensingen – 14 September 1993, Zürich) was a Swiss mathematician, specializing in complex function theory. Biography Pfluger, the son of a farmer, attended secondary school in Stans. He then studied mathematics at ETH Zürich, where in 1935 he received his promotion (Ph.D) under George Pólya with thesis ''Über eine Interpretation gewisser Konvergenz- und Fortsetzungseigenschaften Dirichlet’scher Reihen''. Afterwards, he became a ''Gymnasium'' teacher at the canton school in Zug and the canton school in Solothurn. He received his habilitation qualification in 1938 and in 1939 became a professor extraordinarius for applied mathematics and mathematical physics at the University of Fribourg. At ETH Zürich he became a professor extraordinarius in 1940 and in 1943 a professor ordinarius in the professorial chair vacated by George Pólya in 1940. Heinz Rutishauser
Heinz Rutishauser (30 January 1918 – 10 November 1970) was a Swiss mathematician and a pioneer of modern numerical mathematics and computer science. Life Rutishauser's father died when he was 13 years old and his mother died three years later, so together with his younger brother and sister he went to live in their uncle's home. From 1936, Rutishauser studied mathematics at the ETH Zürich where he graduated in 1942. From 1942 to 1945, he was assistant of Walter Saxer at the ETH, and from 1945 to 1948, a mathematics teacher in Glarisegg and Trogen. In 1948, he received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from ETH with a well-received thesis on complex analysis. From 1948 to 1949, Rutishauser was in the United States at the Universities of Harvard and Princeton to study the state of the art in computing. Peter Karl Henrici (13 September 1923 – 13 March 1987) was a Swiss mathematician best known for his contributions to the field of numerical analysis. Life Henrici was born in Basel and studied law for two years at University of Basel. After World War II he transferred to ETH Zürich where he received a diploma in electrical engineering (1948) and a doctorate in mathematics with Eduard Stiefel as his advisor (1952). Moving to the USA In 1951 he moved to the United States and worked on a joint contract with American University and the National Bureau of Standards. Then, from 1956 to 1962, he taught at University of California, Los Angeles where he became a professor. Boris Yakovlevich Levin ( rus, Борис Яковлевич Левин, 22 December 1906 – 24 August 1993) was a Soviet mathematician who made significant contributions to complex analysis, function theory. Biography Boris Yakovlevich Levin was born 22 December 1906 in Odessa. In 1932 he graduated from the Southern Federal University, University of North Caucasus (Rostov-on-Don). From 1935 to 1949 he is Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics of the Odessa Institute of Marine Engineers. In 1949, invited by Naum Akhiezer, N. I. Akhiezer, he moved to Kharkov, and since that time he worked at the Kharkov State University. In mathematics, particularly in complex analysis, a Riemann surface is a connected one-dimensional complex manifold. These surfaces were first studied by and are named after Bernhard Riemann. Riemann surfaces can be thought of as deformed versions of the complex plane: locally near every point they look like patches of the complex plane, but the global topology can be quite different. For example, they can look like a sphere or a torus or several sheets glued together. The main interest in Riemann surfaces is that holomorphic functions may be defined between them.
