Albert Meserlin
Albert B. Meserlin, Jr. (May 26, 1920 – March 29, 2009) was staff photographer to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. With the passing of British Staff Sergeant Susan Hibbert, Meserlin was one of the last surviving witnesses to the German surrender ceremony at the end of World War II, survived by just Eisenhower staff member Noel J. Weiner and Life magazine photographer Ralph Morse. As staff photographer, he also caught the surrender ceremony on camera. In May 1945, the surrender took place in a windowless room in a corner of a small red-brick schoolhouse – the temporary headquarters of General Dwight Eisenhower, commander-in-chief of the Allied Forces. Susan Hibbert
Susan Nona Hibbert (née Heald; 21 May 1924 – 2 February 2009) was one of the secretaries who typed the English versions of the German surrender document at the conclusion of the Second World War. After her death, there was believed to be only one surviving witness to the surrender ceremony, Albert Meserlin, who died the following month, on 29 March 2009. Hibbert was born the elder child of the Right Honourable Sir Lionel Heald (1897–1981) and his first wife, Flavia, Lady Forbes (1902–1959), daughter of Lt.-Col. James Stewart Forbes and Lady Angela Forbes. Through her maternal grandmother, Hibbert was a great-grandchild of Robert St Clair-Erskine, 4th Earl of Rosslyn. The final battle of the European Theatre of World War II continued after the definitive overall surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allies, signed by Field marshal Wilhelm Keitel on 8 May 1945 in Karlshorst, Berlin. Ralph Morse
Ralph Theodore Morse (October 23, 1917 – December 7, 2014) was a career staff photographer for ''Life'' magazine. He photographed some of the most widely seen pictures of World War II, the United States space program, and sports events, and was celebrated for his multiple-exposure photographs. Morse's success as an improviser led to his being considered ''Life'' magazine's specialist in technical photography.
