The Independent
''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The newspaper was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to the Russian oligarch and former KGB Officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010. In 2017, Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel bought a 30% stake in it. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards. The website and mobile app had a combined monthly reach of 19,826,000 in 2021. John Cyril Edmondson, 2nd Baron Sandford
Commander John Cyril Edmondson, 2nd Baron Sandford, DSC (22 December 1920 – 13 January 2009) was a decorated Royal Navy officer, Church of England clergyman, conservationist and Conservative politician. As a junior minister charged with a review of policy on national parks, he formulated what became known as the "Sandford principle": if there is a conflict between leisure use of the National Park, and protecting its natural state, the state of the park must be preserved. Sandford was the eldest son of Albert Edmondson, 1st Baron Sandford, and his wife Edith Elizabeth (née Freeman, and sister to Ralph, Arnold and Peter). He was educated at St Cyprian's School, Eton, and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and later trained for Holy Orders at Westcott House, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War, notably at the landings in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy, where he was wounded. Baron Sandford is a title that has been created twice, both times in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The first creation came in 1891 when Sir Francis Sandford, a civil servant who played an important role in the implementation of the Elementary Education Act 1870, was made Baron Sandford, of Sandford in the County of Salop. He was the son of Sir Daniel Sandford, politician and Greek scholar, the grandson of the Right Reverend Daniel Sandford, Bishop of Edinburgh, the brother of Daniel Sandford, Bishop of Tasmania, and the first cousin of the Right Reverend Charles Sandford, Bishop of Gibraltar. He was childless and the title became extinct on his death in 1893. The second creation came in 1945 when the Conservative politician Sir James Edmondson was created Baron Sandford, of Banbury in the County of Oxford. George Mathers, 1st Baron Mathers KT, PC, DL (28 February 1886 – 26 September 1965) was a Scottish trade unionist and Labour Party politician. The Treasurer of the Household is a member of the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. The position is usually held by one of the government deputy Chief Whips in the House of Commons. The current holder of the office is Marcus Jones MP. The position had its origin in the office of Treasurer (or Keeper) of the Wardrobe and was ranked second after the Lord Steward. The office was often staffed by the promotion of the Comptroller of the Household. On occasion (e.g. 1488–1503) the office was vacant for a considerable period and its duties undertaken by the Cofferer of the Household. By the end of the 17th century the office of Treasurer was more or less a sinecure, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it was usually occupied by peers who were members of the Government. Sir William Whytehead Boulton, 1st Baronet DL (10 January 1873 – 9 January 1949) was a British soldier and Conservative Party politician. Background Boulton was the son of William Whytehead Boulton and his wife Mary Hudleston Gibson, daughter of John Gibson. He was privately educated. Career Boulton served as lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards and became a major in the 7th Volunteer Battalion, Essex Regiment. He entered the House of Commons in 1931, sitting as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Central until 1945. Boulton was appointed a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in 1940, a post he held for two years. He subsequently was a Government Whip as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household until 1944.
